"Indiana Humanities, the Indiana Historical Bureau, the Indiana State Library, the Indiana Department of Historic Preservation and Archaeology and the Indiana Historical Society are teaming up for a Hoosier Women in STEM Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Hoosier history lovers, including volunteers, reference librarians and specialists—are invited to take part in this fun and focused day of research, writing and fellowship. This event is part of Indiana Humanities’ Quantum Leap initiative, exploring the intersection of the humanities and STEM," according to Indiana Humanities.
The event, designed to acknowledge Hoosier women in STEM who are often overlooked or poorly documented, will take place on Oct. 21 at the Indiana State Library from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch may be pre-ordered for $15 and no prior Wikipedia editing experience is necessary.

The Indiana Statehouse Education Center, located inside of the Indiana State Library, is now offering Second Saturday programming throughout the end of the year.
These family-friendly programs will take place at the state library, located at 315 W. Ohio Street in Indianapolis, on the second Saturday of each month and offer fun activities related to Indiana.
The initial program on Sept. 9 was "Indiana and the Civil War," while the upcoming program on Oct. 14 is "Spooky Stories and Sweet Treats." There will be no Second Saturday in November due to the holiday, but programming will return on Dec. 9 with "Happy Birthday Indiana!" to close out the year.
For more information, contact Bailey Hinton of the Statehouse Education Center.
Proposals for panel
sessions, poster sessions and workshops are still being accepted for the 18th
Distance Library Services Conference. The conference will be held April 11-13,
2018, in San Antonio.
Panel sessions are an
opportunity for three or four presenters from different institutions to
interactively address an issue of importance to distance librarianship and
should focus on helping attendees understand multiple perspectives on a topic.
Poster sessions
provide an informal forum to report on innovative projects, introduce new
services and resources or test research ideas of interest to distance
librarianship. Posters should be a creative visual representation of a topic,
including graphs, tables, charts and images.
Workshops are two hour sessions that provide active learning opportunities for attendees.
Participants will engage an issue, learn a new skill or develop an action plan
or other activity where hands-on learning is integral.
Proposals will be
accepted through Oct. 1, 2017. For more information on proposals and to submit a proposal, click here. To learn more about the conference, click here.
An
unveiling of Indianapolis and library history awaits as the entire community is
invited to the free Centennial Celebration of Indianapolis Public Library's Central Library on Saturday,
Oct. 7, 2017 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 40 E. St. Clair St. in Indianapolis.
The day’s activities will include the revealing
of contents in a time capsule from March 24, 1916 when the cornerstone was laid
for a new Central Library that was dedicated on Oct. 7, 1917. Library
records indicate that among the items in the time capsule are original works by
beloved Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley, copies of Indianapolis newspapers from
1916, programs from local literary clubs, coins, postage stamps, postcard
photos, documents relating to library operations and many other historic
artifacts.
Central Library’s Centennial Celebration is made
possible by Buckingham Companies and Friends of the Library through gifts to
The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation. For more information about the celebration, call
317-275-4099 or click here.

Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 is National Women’s Health &
Fitness Day. Over 50,000 women of all ages will participate in events at more
than 500 local event sites throughout the U.S. The Health Information Resource
Center, a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and
materials and organizer of the National Health Information
Awards and Digital
Health Awards, sponsors the event. Their
goal is to promote the importance of regular physical activity and health
awareness for women. Women increasingly play multiple roles in their families,
at work and in their communities. Scheduling time for fitness and paying
attention to health can unintentionally be sidelined to make way for other
things. Exercise and nutrition are important and there are several Government
Information resources that can help foster a culture of awareness in your community.
Heart disease is still the leading cause of death for all
women in the United States. According to the National Center for Health
Statistics, only 48.1 percent of women aged 18 and over met the 2008 federal
physical activity guidelines for aerobic activity through leisure-time activities.
Adult women (46%) were less likely than men (54%) to meet the federal physical
activity guideline for aerobic activity. See the Centers for Disease Control’s
(CDC) page Lower Your
Risk for the Number One Killer of Women to get informed and to take action
for heart health and see their page Overcoming
Barriers to Physical Activity for motivation. For encouragement and
inspiration to get moving, check out the Women’s Sports Foundation
website. There, one can find details about how physical activity for women is
associated with decreased risk for heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more.
