At this year's Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Festival, which takes place every year on the weekend before Labor Day in Auburn, Ind., Eckhart Public Library Director Janelle Graber was presented with the Jack Randinelli Remembrance Recognition Award.
The award, named after the late Jack Randinelli, was presented to Graber by Randinelli's daughter, Kari Ackerman. Ackerman, like her father, serves on the library's board of trustees.
Graber was honored with the award for showing her dedication to the library after a July 2 arson damaged much of the library and the collection. A longtime admirer of Randinelli, Graber graciously accepted the award.
The Eckhart Public Library stated, "We want to congratulate our director, Janelle Graber, on receiving the Jack Randinelli Remembrance Recognition Award at the ACD Festival. She has shown amazing leadership, dedication and determination during this time and we are so proud to have her. Congratulations, Janelle."
Those interested in learning about the fire recovery can find information here. Information about donating to help restore the main library can be found here. Click here for more donation information. All donations up to $100,000 are being matched
by local philanthropists Rick and Vicki James of Auburn.
Editors Su Epstein, Carol Smallwood and Vera Gubnitskaia are seeking chapters for an upcoming book, "Social Justice and Activism in Libraries, Moving Beyond Diversity to Action" to be published by McFarland & Company.
Editors are seeking one or two chapters from U.S. practicing academic, public, school and special librarians and Library and Information Science (LIS) faculty, "sharing how to take the concept of diversity to the next level." Topics can cover a wide range including "inclusivity, tolerance, civic engagement, civic education, human rights and social responsibility in the areas of collection development, programming, professional development, partnerships and outreach."
Authors will be compensated with one complimentary copy of the book per 3,000 to 4,000 word chapter. Up to three authors may co-author a chapter, but only one complimentary book will be provided. Contributors are expected to sign a release form in order to be published and public, school and special librarians and LIS instructors are especially encouraged to submit.
Email the titles of proposed chapters, each described in a few sentences, to Su Epstein by Oct. 30, 2017. Include a brief bio on each author and place TOL and last name on subject line. Click here for more info.
As more of our cultural heritage is digitized and made accessible online by collecting institutions, users are encountering a bewildering variety of information about the rights in digital objects. This workshop explores copyright and how to apply the correct rights statements to your collections.
Presenting will be Greg Cram, the Associate Director of Copyright and Information Policy at The New York Public Library.
The workshop, which is co-sponsored by the Indiana Memory Digital Public Library of America Hub (IM DPLA) and the Indiana Album, Inc., will take place on Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Indiana State Library. Funding provided by the Indiana State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Registration is $25, which includes lunch. Click here for more information and to register.
Indiana Humanities, in partnership with the Indiana State Library and the Indiana Center for the Book, has made available two grant opportunities to coincide with the year-long One State/One Story: Frankenstein program.
Community Read and Frankenfest grants are open to libraries, schools, museums, prisons, community centers, local governments and other tax-exempt organizations.
$1,000 Frankenfest grants will go to 10 communities outside of Marion County to fund 12 hour read-a-thons of the book and $1,000 Community Read grants will be awarded to communities who agree to hold at least three community programs tied to the book. The application deadline for both grants is Oct. 31, 2017.
Click here for application information. Funds provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

September represents Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. According
to the National Cancer
Institute, there are an estimated 10,270 new cases of cancer in the United
States that will be diagnosed among children from birth to 14 years. More than
15,000 children, overall, are diagnosed with cancer each year, which equals
almost 42 per day.
Pediatric
cancer death rates have declined by nearly 70 percent over the past four
decades, though cancer remains the leading cause of death from disease among
children, as about 1,190 children are expected to die from the disease. Childhood
cancer is rare, representing less than one percent of all new cancer diagnoses.
According to the American Cancer Society,
approximately one in 285 children in the United States will be diagnosed with
cancer before the age of 20. The Childhood
Cancer Caucus has put together an informative facts and figures page on the
topic.
In general, childhood cancer trends in Indiana are similar
to what is seen throughout the United States. For most cases of childhood
cancer, the cause is unknown. To learn more about pediatric cancer, the state
of Indiana provides some helpful community resources regarding pediatric
cancer, such as a childhood
cancer toolkit with resources and information. To learn more about the
childhood cancer burden in Indiana, refer to the Indiana
Cancer Facts and Figures 2015 report.
