The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library (PGTPL) Board of Library Trustees is pleased to announce the hiring of the library’s new director, Montie Manning.
Manning comes to Plainfield from the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library in Alexandria, Ind. where he has been the director for the past 13 years. He is very excited to be joining the Plainfield community. The library is also making history as Manning will be the first male director of the PGTPL in their 116 year history. "I'm grateful for the opportunity that the library board has given to me,” explains Manning. Manning started work on Aug. 14, 2017.
“We are pleased to have someone with his wealth of experience and community ties joining our library. Montie will be a great fit for our staff and patrons alike,” explains Joanna Sproull, manager, Community Central, PGTPL.
Manning earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from University of Louisville and a Master of Library Science from University of Kentucky.
"I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of the PGTPL family and am looking forward to working with them to further the Library's already great reputation in the community," explains Manning.
For more information about the library or new director, please visit the PGTPL website.

Situated on land donated by beloved Hoosier poet
James Whitcomb Riley, the original Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) Central Branch limestone building at 40 E. St. Clair Street in Indianapolis was designed by Paul Cret, who devised many of the library’s plans while
fighting in the trenches for his native France in World War I. Dedicated on
Oct. 7, 1917, the Central Library arose from the need to expand beyond the
crowded and inadequate conditions at a building occupied at Ohio and Meridian
Streets since 1893.
The Cret Building, whose architectural features
are highlighted by its classic Greek Doric exterior and an interior ceiling
mural painted in oil on small canvases, received acclaim from such national
publications as Architectural Forum, which in 1918 proclaimed Central
Library as “the most beautiful secular building in the United States, if not
the most beautiful secular building produced in modern times.” In 2016, Elle Decor magazine included the Central Library in its list of the “50 Best Libraries in America.”
From now until October 7, the date the library was dedicated 100 years ago, IndyPL will offer architectural tours, family programs and the unveiling of a 100-year time capsule. For more information on the Central Library’s centennial and related activities, call (317) 275-4099 or visit IndyPL's website.
The West Lafayette Public Library, the Tippecanoe County Public Library (TCPL) and the Monticello-Union Township Public Library are once again teaming up to present One Great Read, a community-wide book-reading event.
Kicking off on Sept. 7 at Pappy's Sweet Shop and running through October, these libraries, along with the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, Second Flight Books, Barnes and Noble and the Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association, will present several programs related to this year's community read book choice, "The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat" by New York Times bestselling author Edward Kelsey Moore.
"The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat," set in Plainview, Indiana, follows a group of three female friends, dubbed "The Supremes" in the 1960s, as they continue their four decade-plus friendship by meeting at Earl's diner to discuss life's changes and challenges.
Programs will include book discussions, a writing workshop, a gallery walk, a digitization program, a photographic presentation of Indiana diners and, on Oct. 21 at the downtown branch of TCPL, a live music performance from Moore himself.
Currently Chicago-based, Moore, also a cellist, is an Indiana native and received his B.A. in music from Indiana University.

Aug. 30, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Thurgood Marshall’s confirmation
to the U.S. Supreme Court by President L. B. Johnson. Marshall served on the
court for 24 years, from Oct. 2, 1967 to Oct. 1, 1991. The PBS feature about Justice Marshall in Biographies of the Robes details
Marshall’s successful efforts to overturn the ‘separate but equal’ decision of
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) with the help of his Howard University Law mentor, Charles Hamilton Houston. They were
part of a legal team at the NAACP in New York City out of which Marshall
established the NAACP Legal Defense and
Education Fund in 1939. He worked with the national NAACP from the 1930s
through the 1960s to argue cases and establish precedents for permanent
desegregation of schools in the U.S. In the online exhibit, Separate is not Equal: Brown v. Board of Education, the
Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History describes Justice Marshall’s
legacy as “the culmination of a
lifetime devoted to using the American legal system to provide equal
opportunity for all.”
On Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Central Indiana DNA Interest Group (CiDiG) will present a DNA testing workshop,"DNA Testing for the Genealogist," at the Indiana State Library.
This free workshop focuses on the basics of genetic genealogy and how DNA testing provides new tools for the genealogist. Topics will include: the types of tests available (autosomal (atDNA), Y-dna, and mtDNA tests), testing companies, who to test, understanding DNA test results, ethnicity reports, contacting matches and more. CiDiG team members will be available throughout the sessions to answer questions.
Three sessions, "Adding DNA to Your Genealogy Toolkit" presented by Ann Raymont; "Getting the Most from Your Ancestry DNA Matches," presented by Andrea Ackermann and "Y DNA & mtDNA Testing with Family Tree DNA," presented by Denise Anderson-Decina, will take place throughout the day. Each session is worth one LEU. This is the same program that was presented on June 10, 2017 at the state library.
Attendees may register here by Sept. 13. Contact CiDiG for more information.
