On Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017 from 1 to 4 p.m., the West Lafayette Public Library (WLPL) will, once again, present Family Fun Day.
Family Fun Day is a community engagement event that, in
addition to drawing current library users, reaches out to those who might be
new to the library, community or both. "Since we are in a college town, there
are always families arriving from other parts of the country and the world. Family Fun Day provides an opportunity for them to get to know not only the
library but the community. We partner with the community center across the
street [Morton Center]; in fact, we close the street between the two buildings for the day," said Scott Tracey, WLPL assistant director.
This year's event will feature a drum program with Charlie Hamrick of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, an improv performance by One Size Fits All and a magic act performed by Mark Brandyberry. Additionally, children can get their faces painted, do crafts and tour a police car, motorcycle or firetruck. Children under 12 will receive a free book.
"This is our sixth year and we have had over 700 people
in the three hours it's held, which I think bodes well for the future
of public libraries in Indiana," Tracey said.
Visit the WLPL's website for more information.
Nationally-acclaimed author, musician and child
development specialist Jim Gill will hit five Indiana libraries as part of his Nationwide Campaign for Play tour in September.
The workshop, led by Gill, will incorporate his recent songs as well as feature an in-depth discussion connecting music play with school readiness, literacy
development and early math development. The discussion will link practical activities with the five practices of the ALA’s "Every Child Ready to Read" program. The workshop is three hours and is worth three LEUs.
Gill will make the following stops; click links to register:
Monday, Sept. 18, 2017 Starke County Public Library - Schricker Main Library Knox, Ind.

As of July 1, 2017, the following changes have been made to the child abuse and neglect reporting laws:
Previously, reports of suspected child abuse or neglect were required to be made orally. Now, reports of suspected child abuse or neglect may be made in writing or verbally.
The law now prevents public institutions, agencies, schools and other entities from establishing a policy that restricts or delays the duty of an employee or individual to make a report of suspected child abuse or neglect.
The law slightly modifies the reporting process when someone makes an “on the job” report as an employee of a public institution. Previously, the employee was required to notify the individual in charge and the individual in charge had an obligation to make the report. Now, the report must be made by the employee first, and then the employee must notify the individual in charge of the public institution, agency, school, etc.
Read the updated Q&A here.
On July 29, 2017, the Switzerland County Public Library celebrated its 100th anniversary. Courtney Allison, southeast regional coordinator with the Indiana State Library, attended the celebration.
The library was legally formed in 1915 and the first building was located on the south side of Main Street. In 1917, the library board asked the county commissioners to make the library open and free to all taxpaying citizens of Switzerland County, making it the first countywide library system in the state of Indiana.

August is National
Immunization Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC)’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory
Diseases and the National Public Health Information Coalition. These
organizations have collaborated to provide communication
toolkits for reaching out to people of all ages. Each week of August
focuses on a different part of the lifespan:
- Babies
and young children (July 31-August 6)
- Pregnant
women (August 7-13)
- Adults
(August 14-20)
- Preteen/Teen
(August 21-27)
- Back
to School (July/August)
HealthFinder.gov provides a toolkit which
includes tips on spreading the word, sample tweets, e-cards and other
resources.
According to a study of “Public
Health and Economic Consequences of Vaccine Hesitancy for Measles in the United
States” published last week in JAMA
Pediatrics, “even a modest 5% decline in MMR vaccine coverage could result
in a 3-fold increase in annual measles
cases, with an additional $2.1 million in economic costs in children aged 2 to
11 years.” The estimates are even higher when considering infant, adolescent,
and adult populations. Measles “still poses a substantial threat for large
outbreaks in children, despite public perception that measles is no longer a
risk to children in the U.S.”
To ensure children and loved ones are immunized, check the CDC and Indiana School Immunization
Requirements for schedules
and more detailed information about vaccinations.
In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics provides an
article, “Vaccine
Safety: Examine the Evidence,” which shares evidence about the safety of
certain types and numbers of vaccines, including evidence against the
association of vaccines with the diagnosis of autism in children.
