Net Literacy computers again available

netl

Since 2011, the Indiana State Library, in partnership with Net Literacy, has made over 1,555 free, rebuilt computers and monitors available to public and institutional libraries in Indiana.

The Library Development Office (LDO) is pleased to announce that once again a batch of refurbished desktop computers are now available. These computers are all Dell Optiplex 780s, running Windows 7 Professional and have a minimum of 2GB ram, 40GB or larger hard drives, a DVD Drive, antivirus software, an Ethernet card and are internet-ready. These computers come with all of the required cables, mice and keyboards. Flat screen monitors are also available.

Quantities are limited and priority will be given to recipients that can arrange to pick up the computers at the Indiana State Library. In a few cases, computers may be delivered to requesting libraries, but recipients are strongly encouraged to pick up the computers if possible. Electronics cannot be shipped via InfoExpress.

Please visit Net Literacy's website to learn more about the organization and their efforts to improve digital literacy nationwide. These computers are available to any public or institutional library in Indiana. Schools are not eligible for this service.

To request computer(s) for your library, please complete the following short questionnaire.

Contact D. Michael Hicks from the state library with any questions.

Call for papers: Libraries, archives, museums and popular culture

pca

The 2018 Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association  (PCA/ACA) annual conference will take place at the J.W. Marriott in downtown Indianapolis on Mar. 28-31.

According to A Library Writer's Blog, "the Libraries, Archives, Museums and Popular Culture area is soliciting papers dealing with any aspect of popular culture as it pertains to libraries, archives, museums or research. Possible topics include descriptions of research collections or exhibits, studies of popular images of libraries, librarians, or museums, relevant analyses of social networking or web resources, popular culture in library education, the future of libraries and librarians or reports on developments in technical services for collecting and preserving popular culture materials."

Grad students are encouraged to submit.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is October 1, 2017. Please send all inquiries to Allen Ellis committee chair, and professor library services at the Frank Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University or Casey Hoeve, committee co-chair and assistant professor at Kansas State University.

Visit the PCA/ACA's website for more information.

New director manual now available on state library's website

ISLLogo

The New Director Manual 2017 Version is now available online.

Library directors and public library staff members are encouraged to download the latest version of the director's manual, as sufficient changes have been made from the previous version.

To download the manual with complete table of contents, click here. The manual's cover can be found here

Questions may be directed to Karen Ainslie, public library consultant at the Indiana State Library's Library Development Office.

Updated Certification Manual and Detailed Summary of Indiana Library Certification Requirements now available on state library website

ISLLogo

A revised and updated copy of the Certification Manual for Public Library Professionals is now available on the Indiana State Library's website at this location

While much of the manual should seem familiar, several stylistic changes and changes in emphasis have been made. This update aims to address recent questions, provide clear explanations and, generally, be easier to understand.

Along with the new Certification Manual, an updated copy of the Detailed Summary of Indiana Public Librarian Certification Requirements has been posted. It has a more dramatic makeover than the Certification Manual.

Reviewing both the manual and the certification requirements is a good way to keep up on the latest certification rules, requirements and policies.

Questions may be directed to Cheri Harris, certification program director and legal consultant at the Indiana State Library.

Presidents with August birthdays

pres

Of the 45 United States presidents, only five have had birthdays in August. Starting at the most recent, Barack Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961, Bill Clinton was born Aug. 19, 1946, Lyndon B. Johnson was born Aug. 27, 1908, Herbert Hoover was born Aug. 10, 1874 and Benjamin Harrison was born Aug. 20, 1833. President Benjamin Harrison has Indiana connections, but more about that in a moment. A good place to look for information about these gentlemen, and the other U.S. Presidents, is at the White House website, where you will find brief biographies about all our illustrious presidents. The presidential libraries would also be an enjoyable journey, both online and in person. The library and museum websites and locations are listed below.

Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum
210 Parkside Drive
West Branch, IA 52358

LBJ Presidential Library
2313 Red River Street,
Austin, TX 78705

Bill Clinton Library and Museum
1200 President Clinton Ave
Little Rock, AR 72201

Benjamin Harrison, our 23rd president, was born in Ohio, but moved to Indianapolis and practiced law before being elected. He then moved back to Indianapolis after his term ended. Fort Benjamin Harrison, on the northeast side of Indianapolis, was named in his honor. The former military installation is now a state park where visitors can enjoy nature as well as learn about the military history of the site.

For those interested in the history of our presidents, either the office itself or the men who held it, visit the aforementioned sites and learn about this aspect of U.S. citizenship.
