Riley Hospital for Children is seeking individuals who would be interested in starting and running a
Friends of the Riley Library group. The focus of the group will be to
support volunteer efforts for the library and to raise funds for the
library to purchase and pay for magazine subscriptions, collection
updates, supplies and, ultimately, to help fund library staff. The
overall goal would be to generate the necessary funds to create and
support an endowment for the library and its programs and services. The
proposed friends of the library group will work closely with Dena Vincent, librarian at the Edward A. Block Family Library at Riley Hospital for Children, and
with the Riley Children’s Foundation to augment the support currently
provided.
The Edward A. Block Family Library is a library for patients and
families. The library is similar to a small public library offering
books for all ages, movies, video games, music CDs, magazines, phone
charging, computers and printing/faxing/copying. Other services include
Riley Reading Time on CCTV, dial-a-story and volunteers reading to
patients and delivering book carts to their rooms.
If you would like to become a member of the Friends of the Riley Library, contact Dena Vincent at (317) 944-1149 or via email.

On Thursday, June 30, 2017, the Indiana Bicentennial Commission met for the final time at the Indiana State Library. The commission, which included former First Lady Karen Pence and former Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, who served as co-chair, set "the direction of the planning and funding of a strategic plan to implement a cost-effective, inclusive [and] realistic celebration of Indiana's 2016 bicentennial." Started under the guidance of former governor Mitch Daniels in 2012, the commission worked for five years planning and implementing the state's bicentennial celebration.
When Indiana turned 200 on Dec. 16, 2016, the Bicentennial Commission had carried out several major events and completed many major celebratory projects, such as the construction of the Bicentennial Plaza outside of the statehouse, the building of Statehouse Education Center in the Indiana State Library and the execution of the torch relay, which saw a bicentennial torch carried through all 92 of Indiana's counties.
The state library is still seeking materials related to Indiana's bicentennial for archival purposes. Individuals or organizations with such materials may contact Bethany Fiechter of the Rare Books & Manuscripts Division at the state library.

For the last decade, the MetaArchive Cooperative has preserved the digital collections of more
than 60 archives, museums, public libraries and library consortia all over the globe. It has done so in a network run by
members, for members.
As part of the celebration, and to help smaller
and under-resourced libraries, archives and museums preserve their content, MetaArchive has launched the following:
A new option to pay a technology fee rather than
operating a server node within our preservation network.
A Collaborative Membership Level that allows many organizations to
band together and share their membership costs.
A simplified and
streamlined ingest process using BagIt.
For
more details on how to join the MetaArchive Cooperative, please visit their new and improved website or contact Sam Meister.

Welcome
to the Government Information Minute. Every week government information
librarians at the Indiana State Library cover current resources on governmental
data at the state, national and international levels; all to keep public
well-informed. Follow the Indiana State Data Center on Facebook and Twitter and feel free to leave comments
and suggestions.
Ever wonder what Hoodoos are? Ever want to go sightseeing in
a glacier or hiking in a volcano? Ever wonder what life was like at Sitka?
Well, these and many more adventures are available right here in the United
States’ National Parks. Check out events and get travel tips and ideas at the National Parks Service
website. The interactive Find a Park page allows
visitors to search by state, activity and topic, or by a combination of all
three searches. There are national parks in every state of the union, as well
as the District of Columbia. Some of the parks in New York can even be reached
via subway. There are suggested trips, known as urban adventures, including an
adventure in Washington, D.C. where you can take the metro to each park.
Here are some, but not all, of the activities listed on the
site: Snorkeling, tubing, caving, shopping, surfing, museum exhibits,
astronomy, canyoneering and compass and GPS.
There are a great many topics to plan a trip around, including:
Volcanos, urban America, women’s history, African-American history, wetlands,
wars and conflicts, religion and spirituality, music, medicine, LGBTQ American
heritage, impact craters and climate change.
And don’t forget to check out the Active Alerts in Parks page
before heading out. These can be checked by state, alert type and by park. Now
go have an adventure!
