Monroe
County Public Library (MCPL) has been named the 2017 winner of the American Library
Association’s (ALA) Excellence in Library Programming Award for their program series,
“Discuss, Meet, & Act: The Power of Words.”
The
award, supported by ALA’s Cultural Communities Fund, recognizes one library
that demonstrates excellence by providing programs that have community impact
and respond to community needs.
The
bi-annual event “The Power of Words,” presented by MCPL
and the Friends of the Library, features an author writing on important issues that
speak to the average citizen’s ability to positively change the world in which
we live. The 2015 "The Power of Words" event featured congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis, who had recently announced the publication of his
graphic novel "March: Book Two," accompanied by the novel’s
co-creators, Andrew Aydin and Bloomington-based graphic novelist Nate Powell.
The
ALA Excellence in Library Program Award, consisting of $5,000 and a citation of
achievement, was presented to MCPL at the ALA Annual Conference
in Chicago on June 25. The Library plans to use the award money for this year’s
"Power of Words" and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read initiative.

NoveList and LibraryAware are seeking three libraries that are "clear
about their needs, have great ideas and are looking to develop and
implement a marketing plan focused on connecting with readers" to propose projects for their "Engaging Readers at Your Public Library" grant program. Each selected library will receive a $5,000 grant, plus the "full support and
expertise of the LibraryAware team of marketing specialists and graphic
designers."
NoveList and LibraryAware will select three proposed projects and act as marketing and design consultants on those three projects. Applications must be submitted on behalf of a public library. The application deadline is Sept. 1, 2017 and the proposed protect must be completed by May 1, 2018.

From the U.S. Census Bureau, Facts
for Features: Fourth of July 2017
There were 56 signers to the Declaration of Independence.
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman and Robert R.
Livingston comprised the Committee of Five that drafted the declaration.
Jefferson, regarded as the strongest and most eloquent writer, wrote most of
the document.
It is also worth noting that:
- John
Hancock, president of the Second Continental Congress, was the first
signer and a merchant by trade. In 2015, there were 7.7 million business
establishments with paid employees in the United States; 1.1 million, like
Hancock, were in the retail trade industry.
- Benjamin Franklin, who represented Pennsylvania, was the oldest of the
signers at age 70. Franklin County had an estimated population of 153,851
as of July 1, 2016. Edward Rutledge, of South Carolina, was the youngest at age
26.
- Two future presidents signed, John Adams
and Thomas Jefferson. Both died on
the 50th anniversary of signing the declaration on July 4, 1826. There are
12 counties nationwide named Adams and 26 named Jefferson.
- Nelson County and Wythe County in Virginia were named for two of the six signers who represented the
state of Virginia: Thomas Nelson Jr. and George Wythe.
