Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award winner announced

firefly

Indiana Center for the Book (ICB) co-directors Christy Franzman and Suzanne Walker have announced children's author Britta Teckentrup as the 2017 Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award winner for her book "Don’t Wake Up the Tiger."

The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award is an initiative of the ICB to promote early childhood literacy in Indiana. The selections are nominated by the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Committee, made up of professionals in Indiana including teachers, librarians, caregivers and project coordinators, and the award is voted on by children six and under.

“ICB is excited to be in its third year of this picture book award focusing on early literacy. Children from infancy to five are absolutely capable of enjoying books and being discriminating judges,” Walker said. “The nominated books are chosen for their ability to encourage parents and children to talk, sing, read, write and play together. It is our hope that caregivers will see this list of books as a quality go-to resource for having fun and learning with their young children.”

“'Don’t Wake Up the Tiger' is a fun, interactive book that kids really enjoy,” Franzman said. “Getting children actively involved with books will motivate them on their road to literacy.”

Upon hearing the news of receiving the award, Teckentrup said, “That’s wonderful news. How very exciting. Even more so as the award was voted for by children. Thank you very much for the award and for nurturing the love of reading and books!”

Muncie Public Library wins Library of the Future Award

muncie

The Muncie Public Library (MPL)  has been selected to receive the 2017 Library of the Future Award, sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and Information Today Inc. publishing company. The library was selected for its innovative Digital Climbers program that motivates and inspires children ages eight and up to experiment with technology and master skills that contribute to learning in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

Digital Climbers is  a comprehensive program that encourages students to work independently to master technology skills. Participants compete with other students as they chart their progress through artwork, badges, rewards and public recognition. This program motivates kids to learn using tools such as 3D printers and design applications, snap circuits, Adobe Photoshop, Garage Ban and the Osmo educational gaming system.

“Too often kids come into the library to check out our tech, but don’t actually give it a chance or spend any time challenging themselves to learn it more deeply,” said Rebecca Parker, technology coordinator at MPL. “This program gives them the impetus to do that.”

More information on the ALA/Information Today Library of the Future Award and how to submit a nomination is available on the ALA website.

At the start of May, President Trump proclaimed the month of May as National Mental Health Awareness Month. Originally established in 1949, National Mental Health Awareness Month recognizes millions of Americans affected by mental illness and works to ensure care and treatment for those who are suffering. Nearly 10 million Americans suffer from mental illness, and even worse, approximately 60 percent of adults and 50 percent of adolescents are unable to get the treatment or service needed for proper care.

Another goal for Mental Health Awareness Month is to raise awareness of the trauma and impact mental illness can have, physically or emotionally, on others. Various government agencies have created helpful resources related to mental health awareness. Mental health is an essential part of a person’s overall health, and with preventative work and treatment, people are able to recover from their mental disorders to live full productive lives. Please visit Youth.gov for information on how to address mental health and well-being with children. The National Institute of Mental Health is the largest scientific organization that focuses on the study of mental health. Finally, visit Mental Health.gov to learn the basics, identify warning signs, how to talk about mental health and to receive help.
