Roy
Lambert, local history librarian with the Aurora Public Library District in Aurora, Indiana, will be speaking at the historic Gettysburg
Lincoln Railroad Station in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on Saturday,
May 13, 2017 from
1 p.m to 2 p.m. as a guest of The Gettysburg Foundation.
Lambert
will be presenting in first person as Dr. Jacob Ebersole, a physician from
Aurora. Dr. Ebersole enlisted
in the Civil War in 1862 and became the surgeon of the famous Nineteenth
Indiana Regiment Iron Brigade and was the physician in charge of the train
station hospital on the first day of battle, July 1, 1863. Reenacting in uniform, he will tell Dr.
Ebersole’s story of Aurora, his life in the military and letters he sent to his
wife, Francis, in Aurora. Dr. Ebersole
will be speaking from his perspective in the year 1895.

It is now time to renew InfoExpress courier
service subscriptions for the 2017-2018 service year, which runs from July 1, 2017 to June 30,
2018.
The Indiana State Library (ISL) is pleased to announce that,
once again, the cost for InfoExpress remains unchanged. ISL will strive to
keep costs as low as possible in negotiating a new contract next year.
Public, academic and special libraries have until
August 1, 2017 to renew and payment is expected to be received by ISL by August 31, 2017. For libraries that have not renewed by
that date, service will end as of September 1, 2017. Service to any library, whose
payment has not been received by October 1, 2017, will be suspended until full
payment has been received.
School library (K-12) renewal requests should be submitted by August 1, 2017 and payment is due by September 30, 2017 to avoid the loss of service as
of October 1, 2017. Service to any school library will be suspended effective
November 1, 2017 until full payment has been received.
For the 2017-2018
service year, the annual subscription cost for will remain
at $625 per delivery day. ISL, once again, will
provide an upfront subsidy of $525 for the first delivery day for qualifying
libraries. This means that a library's cost for a year's worth of one-day-a-week
courier service is just $100. Public libraries not meeting standards,
and privately funded libraries, are not eligible for this subsidy. This subsidy
is limited to one library per system. Branches are not eligible for this
subsidy. The cost for these libraries would be the full $625 per day.
Click here to renew. After login, a subsidies chart will also be available to view.
Award-winning author Dianna Hutts Aston, known for her nature-themed children's books, will be speaking at the Tippecanoe County Public Library (TCPL) in Lafayette, Indiana on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 4:30 p.m.
The presentation by "lyrical science
writer" Aston will include a show and tell with shells, nests, spiders, eggs and more.
Aston is the author of
15 children’s books, including "An Egg is
Quiet" and "A Rock is Lively." In 2009, her book "The Moon Over Star" was chosen by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to read to children
at Capital City Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.
For more information on this free, all-ages event visit TCPL's event page here.
In
the budget recently passed by the general assembly, libraries will see
increased funding for the non-E-Rate portion of their internet connectivity
bills. Many libraries still struggle to provide adequate bandwidth at peak
usage times and the spike in usage during after school hours is especially
taxing for libraries that serve communities with one-to-one programs.
The Pew
Research Center recently released a report that indicates that even though
low-income Americans are experiencing greater levels of connectivity, it is
still significantly different from the adoption rates of middle to high income
households. As more patrons have adopted the use of more devices, the
libraries’ Wi-Fi can be easily overloaded. Adequate broadband delivery to the
library is just the first step in helping to alleviate this issue, but one that
has been recognized by the state as a service that would benefit everyone
through increased funding.
With one week left to complete your filing for E-Rate
this year, libraries have an opportunity to increase the “ask” for connectivity
for next year. Filing is due on or before Thursday, May 11, 2017 at midnight. The
additional $500,000 dedicated to support library connectivity is a great tool
to leverage both federal and state funding to help bridge the digital divide
within your community.
For questions, please contact Karen Ainslie of the Indiana
State Library.
High
school yearbooks from Lawrence Central, Southport and Perry Meridian high schools are the latest additions to the growing collection of Indianapolis-related
historic materials available for viewing on The Indianapolis Public Library’s
(IndyPL) Digital Indy website.
Thousands of images of class photos, clubs
and athletic teams can be found in these full-text collections that join those
from all 10 original Indianapolis Public Schools, as well as Beech Grove, Ben
Davis, North Central and Warren Central high schools on the Digital Indy site.
IndyPL’s
digital collections are of cultural and historic interest to residents,
students and researchers, and allow for the long-term preservation of
increasingly valuable and fragile original materials, many of which can be
found in the Nina Mason Pulliam Indianapolis Special Collections Room at
the Central Library.
High
school yearbook collections are made possible by Friends of the Library through
gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.

Weather Service (NWS) forecast, customizable to ZIP code. The newest
interface for viewing the forecast maps is available at digital.weather.gov. The National Weather Service is a component of
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA). The Storm
Prediction Center of NOAA has the mission to provide timely and accurate
forecasts and watches for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes over the
contiguous United States.
According to the NWS, heat is one of the leading
weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of
fatalities each year and even more heat-related illnesses. Learn about Heat

Next week, May 7 - 13, 2017, is Hurricane
Preparedness Week 2017. Even if you do not reside in hurricane-prone areas,
you might be planning to visit those areas during summer vacation. The National Hurricane Center monitors and
tracks the development of tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic and Eastern
North Pacific Oceans. View the list of names to be used for tropical storms at this link.
Weather-Ready
Nation is an initiative from NOAA to inform citizens about the importance
of being prepared for any number of weather-related disasters which can occur
year-round. Extreme events like record breaking snowfall, violent tornadoes,
destructive hurricanes, widespread flooding and devastating drought can be
reduced by taking advanced action.
On the state level, the Indiana
Department of Homeland Security also provides resources on how to prepare
for severe weather.
