On Aug. 21, 2017, a spectacular total eclipse of the sun will be visible across the continental U.S. for the first time since 1918. The Space Science Institute (SSI) was awarded a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation that will provide 1.26 million free eclipse glasses and other resources for 1,500 public libraries across the nation. The Research Corporation and Google will also be providing glasses and materials that add an additional 740,000 glasses, bringing the total to over two million glasses that will be distributed to more than 2,400 libraries.
The Eclipse Education Kit (EEK) includes safe eclipse viewing glasses and educational materials to send to each participating library. Over 1,900 libraries have registered on the STAR_Net website. A map on the website shows the location of the registered libraries, including contact information. This will aid professional and amateur astronomers, Solar System Ambassadors and others to easily find libraries with whom to partner. Education materials in the kit will also be made available on the STAR_Net’s Eclipse Resource Center website, so that even libraries and organizations that do not receive the EEK will get guidance on how to do public outreach before the eclipse, plus safe eclipse viewing techniques not dependent on having a pair of eclipse glasses. By engaging many library organizations, STAR_Net ensures that libraries throughout the country will be aware of the eclipse well in advance in order to plan a successful event.
April is the last month to apply to receive free eclipse glasses. Visit the application site here.
Researchers at San Jose State University's (SJSU) iSchool are looking for survey participants in preparation for this year's Special Libraries Association's (SLA) Annual Conference.
Seeking a geographically diverse sample of Library and Information Science (LIS) career paths, SJSU hopes to determine the career impact that participating in LIS professional organizations has for LIS students.
SJSU is specifically seeking participants who have an MLIS, or equivalent, and work in the broad LIS field in the U.S.
The survey can be found at this location.
From her beginnings as a
page in 1967 to her current role as overseer of eight library branches, Sharon
Bernhardt reflects upon her career at the Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) as her
life’s one constant that, in turn, has afforded her great opportunities to grow
and adapt over the decades.
This year, IndyPL
celebrates Bernhardt’s 50th year of continuous service, the most for
any Library employee past or present. Her introduction to the library as a page
at the Eagle Branch, then located in a strip center on Tibbs Avenue, served as
“a good first ‘real’ job” while attending Northwest High School. Continuing to
work at the Library throughout her postsecondary schooling, Bernhardt graduated
in 1973 from Marian College (now University) with the goal of becoming a social
worker. “But at that time in my life I wasn’t ready for that, so I stayed with
the Library.” After earning her Masters of Library Science in 1978, Bernhardt’s
stay has become her calling.

Compared to many of her previous paintings, often characterized with
seemingly chaotic textures, drips, brushstroke, and colors, “Skybridge”
represents a moment of pause and reflection; a breath of calm in the
middle of the storm. The “Skybridge” series, created over a period of
six months, is the first group of paintings Stahl has created with the
intention that they be viewed together in a particular order to allow
the viewer move through this achievement of calm with her. It portrays a
reflection of the inner self: how we process and compartmentalize; how
we meditate on our daily lives; how we release internalized anxiety;
and, how, in the end, we find ourselves inside.
"Skybridge" will be on display in the Exhibition Hall of the Indiana
State Library from Thursday, April 13, 2017 to July 12, 2017. For hours
of operation, directions and parking information, click here.

April is national Alcohol Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Dependence, Inc.
Drinking too much alcohol increases people’s risk of
injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease and certain types of cancer. This month, visit
the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration website dedicated to Addiction Prevention and Mental
Health Promotion to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers
of drinking too much, and to provide yourself with tools for seeking additional
care when necessary.
If you are drinking too much, you can improve your health by
cutting back or quitting. Here are some strategies to help you cut back or stop
drinking:
- Limit
your drinking to no more than one drink a day for women or two drinks a
day for men.
- Keep
track of how much you drink.
- Choose
a day each week when you will not drink.
- Don’t
drink when you are upset.
- Limit
the amount of alcohol you keep at home.
- Avoid
places where people drink a lot.
- Make a
list of reasons not to drink.
If you are concerned about someone else’s drinking, offer to
help.
Indiana has an Addition Hotline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357)
available 24/7 for individuals seeking additional treatment.
For more information on preventing alcohol abuse, you can examine
community risk factors associated with the availability of alcohol in your county
by using the Indiana Prevention Resource
Center’s County Profiles and Alcohol
Outlet Density tool. The Centers for Disease Control provides a website on Alcohol and Public Health, fact sheets
on alcohol use and health here and
infographics on alcohol use here.
For promotional materials during the month of April, see the
Healthfinder.gov toolkit.
The Indiana State Library is gathering data related to the INSPIRE website in an
effort to help Indiana residents get the most out of the service.
Librarians are encouraged to share this survey with their patrons via social media.
The survey can be found here.
