IU South Bend’s Schurz Library launches “South Bend’s Own Words” podcast

podcastiu

On Feb. 24, 2017 Indiana University’s Franklin D. Schurz library launched “South Bend’s Own Words,” a podcast showcasing the experiences of the people who lived, worked and made South Bend their home. Edited from the Oral History Collection of the Civil Rights Heritage Center at the Indiana University South Bend Archives, the first episode is now available online.

From executive producer Kevin Tidmarsh, and hosted by Civil Rights Heritage Center Curator George Garner, this project was made possible by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Indiana State Library.

Consortia allows Indiana libraries to SHAREit™

auto

Auto-Graphics, Inc., the industry-leading and first web-based library resource management solutions provider is pleased to announce the successful implementation SHAREit in the state of Indiana. SHAREit powers Indiana’s Statewide Remote Circulation Service (SRCS), the state’s interlibrary loan (ILL) resource-sharing tool. The web-based software allows libraries to greatly expand resource sharing, while reducing the amount of time spent managing these loans among public, academic and special libraries within the state.

Many Indiana libraries allow their users to locate and request materials held by different libraries, provided that all of the locations are using the same library management system. This creates a silo, making it easy for patrons to get access to materials within that silo.

According to Steven Schmidt in the Library Development Office (LDO) at the Indiana State Library, “The idea of breaking down the individual silos that libraries have built up around themselves over the past decades should appeal to all states. For us, one of the most important parts of linking those silos together was the linking together and cross-pollination of public, special and academic libraries in a single, user-centric system. Post-implementation, due to the simplified user interface SHAREit provides, staff workflow has been improved and patron satisfaction with ease of discovery and access to materials greatly increased.”

The SHAREit-powered SRCS tool seamlessly links together 225 different libraries that use an assortment of over twenty different integrated library systems (ILS). The combined catalog of these library systems represents a statewide catalog of nearly 36 million items.

Indiana women’s history by the numbers

In Indiana in 1920, from the data available:

  • 6,259 owned farms.
  • 1,339,558 (93 percent) were born in the United States.
  • 28,696 (two percent) were naturalized citizens, meaning they were born in another country but were now U.S. citizens.
  • 19,682 (1.4 percent) were categorized in the 1920 census as "alien," meaning no steps had been taken to gain American citizenship.
  • 1,353 had their "first papers," meaning they had begun the multi-step process of receiving final naturalization papers.

In Indiana today:

  • In 2015, females outnumbered males in Indiana by 95,950. There were 3,357,815 females and 3,261,865 males.
