In summer of 2016, the American Library Association (ALA) Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion released its 58 recommendations to build more equity, diversity and inclusion among its members, the field of librarianship and the communities ALA serves. Diversity in the library profession is critical and can lead to improved library services and community connections.
ALA Emerging Leaders works on advancing diversity and fair representation among public libraries across the nation. ALA aims to identify organizations that are exemplary in the field and report on the lessons learned from their successes and challenges.
Information collected in this survey will be considered “best practices” and shared in Public Library Association (PLA) publications and continuing education.
For this survey, ALA Emerging Leaders is seeking libraries with unique and forward thinking diversity initiatives related to recruitment, professional development, promotion and mentoring within the library profession.
The survey can be found here. For more information on ALA's Emerging Leaders program, click here.

The West
Lafayette Public Library (WLPL), along with the Purdue University Student
Concert Committee and the City of West Lafayette, will host their fourth annual
Record Store Day concert on Saturday, April 22 at 4 p.m. in the library’s amphitheater.
People’s Brewery and Hot Box Pizza will be serving food and craft beer during
the event.
“Promoting the arts and arts education is a
must for any community that wishes to attract talented citizens and thriving
businesses. Record Store Day presents a great opportunity to showcase local
artists and the businesses and institutions that support them. A university
town should have live music on Record Store Day. I’m thrilled the library can
be part of this event,” said Scott Tracey, WLPL’s assistant director.
Slated to
perform are Indiana musicians TJ Rosa, City Mist, Paper Claw and Service.
According to
Record Store Day’s website, “Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a
gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to
celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1,400
independently-owned record stores in the U.S. and thousands of similar stores
internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today
there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except
Antarctica.”

about Record Store Day here. Visit WLPL’s website here.
Since 2011, the Indiana State Library (ISL), in partnership
with Net Literacy, has made over 1,400 free, rebuilt computers and monitors
available to public and institutional libraries in Indiana.
The Library Development Office (LDO) is pleased to announce
that once again a batch of refurbished desktop computers are now available at
no cost. These computers are all Dell Omniplex 780s, running Windows 7
Professional and have a minimum of 2GB ram, 40GB or larger hard drives, a DVD
Drive, antivirus software, an Ethernet card and are internet-ready. These
computers come with all of the required cables, mice and keyboards. Flat screen
monitors are also available.
Quantities are limited and priority will be given to recipients
that can arrange to pick up the computers at the state library from now through
November 1, 2017. In a few cases, computers may be delivered to requesting
libraries, but recipients are strongly encouraged to pick up the computers if
possible. Electronics cannot be shipped via InfoExpress. Schools are not
eligible for this service.
Visit Net Literacy’s website to
learn more about the organization and their efforts to improve digital literacy
nationwide.
To request computer(s) for your library, please complete this questionnaire.
Please direct any questions to Steven Schmidt or Michael Hicks of ISL's LDO office.

Hedy Lamarr, 1940
Women's History Month
Throughout the month of
March the US Department of Energy (DOE) will
be highlighting women who have made contributions to the science, technology,
engineering and mathematics or STEM Fields. The first woman to be highlighted
is Hedy Lamarr. According to the DOE’s website not only was Hedy Lamarr one of
the most popular actresses of her day, but she was also an inventor, patenting
a concept known as “frequency jumping.” Frequency jumping is how cell phones
work. So, Hedy Lamarr is responsible for our cell phones. The site will be
updated a number of times throughout the month highlighting more women and
their contributions to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday
Clocks will need to be set ahead one hour this weekend.
Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 2 a.m. DST adjusts
the official local time forward from the official
standard time during summer months; by one hour in most time
zones. In the United States, DST begins on the second Sunday in March and ends
on the first Sunday in November. The Uniform
Time Act of 1966 and the Energy
Policy Act of 2005 set when Daylight Saving begins and ends in the
calendar year. States, territories and tribal areas decide if they will observe
DST.
Visit USA.gov for
more information and resources about Daylight Saving Time.

The Indiana Historical Bureau (IHB), housed inside the Indiana State Library, has launched a brand new monthly Indiana history podcast titled "Talking Hoosier History."
On the first day of each month IHB will cover an Indiana-related historical subject. This month's premier episode is "Bill Garrett and the integration of IU Basketball."

The Syracuse-Turkey Creek Township Public Library has been
awarded the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) small library
strategic planning grant in Indiana. The competitive grant is offered to Indiana
member libraries who are Class C public libraries. The grant will provide
MCLS’s newly-developed consulting services free of charge to the
Syracuse-Turkey Creek Township Public Library for the creation of their
strategic plan.
Funds for the services were made available through a grant
program established by the MCLS Board of Trustees from the proceeds of the sale
of the former INCOLSA building.
