Poetry Out Loud, a nationwide poetry reading competition, returns to the Indianapolis Public Library's Central Branch this Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017.
The Indiana State Library and Indiana Arts Commission have partnered to host the statewide portion of the contest. Fifteen contestants will compete for a cash prize, poetry books for their schools and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national Poetry Out Loud finals in April.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation are
supporting partners to Poetry Out Loud, a free high school program which
encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through
memorization and recitation.

Building on the success of last year’s Hoosier Women at Work conference, the
Indiana Historical Bureau and the Indiana State Library are proud to host
“Hoosier Woman at Work: Science, Technology, and Medicine,” a women’s history
symposium, on April 1, 2017, at the Indiana State Library and Historical
Building in downtown Indianapolis. The keynote speaker is Sharra Vostral, associate professor of history at Purdue University and author of "Under Wraps: A History
of Menstrual Hygiene Technology."
This one-day conference will explore and expand the knowledge of women’s
contributions to Indiana’s science, technology, and medical fields via
speakers, presentations and panel discussions. Topics will include women medical
pioneers; science of home economics; women’s role in public health, sanitation,
and the environment; scientific and medical technology; access to medical care,
training and employment in these fields and the impact of science, technology
and medicine on complicating or improving women’s lives.
Sessions are LEU approved. Click here to register.
The Academic Libraries of Indiana and the Indiana State Library invite all Indiana libraries to a one-day resource sharing conference, Discovery to Delivery VII: Exploring New Pathways to Sharing, on April 7, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Indianapolis Public Library Central Branch located at 40 East Saint Clair St.
Program information and registration are available here. Registration closes on March 24, 2017.
Improved
access, new computer lab and updated community room are among the many features
awaiting patrons when the freshly-renovated East Washington Branch of The
Indianapolis Public Library, 2822 E. Washington Street, reopens its doors to
the public at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017.
Listed in 2016 in the National Register of
Historic Places, the East Washington Branch is one of two original Carnegie
Libraries still serving Indianapolis. The $2.4 million project, the first major
renovation since the branch opened in 1910, features a 2,200-square-foot
northward expansion that includes a 16-unit computer lab, updated restrooms and
new children’s program space. Significant natural lighting from windows on the
building’s north side creates a brighter and more open environment. All improvements
were made with the goal of maintaining the building’s historic integrity.
While the historic exterior entry steps
remain, a new street-level elevator leading to the main lobby has been
installed to improve access. The branch parking lot features new and signed
handicapped spaces with entrance remaining the same from East Washington Street
and rear alley from Rural Street.
The improvements, generated from a series
of neighborhood engagement meetings, will allow the branch to improve services,
such as computer access, job search assistance, tutoring, children’s literacy
and community programming for Eastside residents.
“This
is an extremely rewarding culmination of a process that will allow the library
to be responsive to the East Washington community’s long-term needs,” said
IndyPL CEO Jackie Nytes. “We invite everyone to experience their new branch and
take advantage of all the free resources it offers.”
This and other capital projects identified
in the library’s strategic plan through 2020 are funded from individual bonds
approved by the Indianapolis City-Council Council totaling over $58 million being
assessed without any increase in the Library's current debt service tax rate.

IndyPL capital projects, visit www.indypl.org.
