One of the responsibilities of the Indiana State Library is to provide support for the state’s 237 public libraries through its Extension Division. While Indiana celebrates its Bicentennial year, many of the state’s public libraries are also marking their centennial anniversaries.
The early 1900s were a busy time for the Public Library Commission, which initially consisted of three unpaid citizens appointed by the governor: Former State Librarian Jacob P. Dunn (Indianapolis), Mrs. Elizabeth C. Earl (Connersville), and William W. Parsons (Terre Haute). With a modest annual budget, the trio oversaw a number of services that were crucial in the establishment of our state’s public library system.
So what were they doing in 1916? Read more
on the Indiana State Library’s blog.
Children’s author, Brian Won, is the recipient of the 2016
Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award for his book Hooray for Hat!
The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award is an initiative of
the Indiana Center for the Book to promote early childhood literacy in Indiana.
This year over 3,300 votes by Indiana children ages 0-5 were
turned in for the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award. That is over one
and a half times more votes than were turned in last year. Last
year votes from 32 counties were received and this year votes were turned in
from 51 counties! Thank you to all libraries and caregivers who
participated in the vote for this year’s award.
It was a fairly close vote that split out thusly:
Hooray for Hat! by Brian Won – 26% of the votes
Nose to Toes, You are Yummy! by Tim Harrington –
22% of the votes
I Got the Rhythm by Connie Schofield-Morrison - 21%
of the votes
Bear Sees Colors by Karma Wilson – 19% of the votes
Two is Enough by Janna Matthies – 12% of the votes
Congratulations to all our nominated titles for making it to
the ballot and especially to Hooray for Hat! for winning our
award.
The
Indianapolis Public Library’s online collection of full-text local high school
yearbooks now includes those from Beech Grove High School that date back to the
1940s. Viewers can enjoy class photos and information about clubs, athletic
teams, faculty and school-related activities that can be freely accessed and
downloaded from the Library’s Digital Indy site at digitalindy.org.
The collection of 52 Beech Grove “Hornet” yearbooks,
scanned by the Beech Grove Public Library, joins those from all 10 original Indianapolis
Public Schools high schools as well as Ben Davis, North Central and Warren
township high schools. They are among the Library’s many digital collections of
cultural and historic interest to residents, students and researchers that
allow for a long-term option to preserve increasingly valuable and fragile original
materials.
Many Beech Grove hard-copy yearbooks will
be displayed on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Beech Grove
Public Library, 1102 Main Street, during which the public is invited to
celebrate the merger of the Beech Grove library as the 24th branch
of The Indianapolis Public Library, which takes effect on June 1. The event
also will kick off IndyPL’s 2016 Summer Reading Program and include a variety
of family activities.
Another way to access the Beech Grove High
School yearbook collection is to click on “Digital Collections” from the
Library’s homepage at indypl.org and go to the Beech Grove site under “High
School Collections,” where browsing and advanced search options for individual
school years are available.
The Jasper County Public Library has embarked on a new program geared to come along side families to help children develop a lifelong love of reading. Check out all the great information on their pre-literacy skills program 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program by clicking here.

It is time to renew your
subscription to the InfoExpress Courier. The service year runs from July 1 to
June 30, and the window for renewing our statewide library courier is now open.
Public, Academic or Special
Libraries have from until August 1 to renew, and payment is expected to be
received by the State Library by August 31st. For libraries
that have not renewed by that date, service will end as of September 1. Service
to any library, whose payment has not been received by October 1, will be
suspended until full payment has been received.
School Libraries (K-12) are
on a slightly different calendar. Their renewal requests should be
submitted by September 1 and payment is due by September 30th to
avoid the loss of service as of October 1. Service to any school library
will be suspended effective November 1, until full payment has been received.
The State Library is also
pleased to announce that once again, the cost for the InfoExpress courier
remains the same as last year. This is the final year of our current
contract with NOW courier. ISL will strive to keep costs as low as possible in negotiating our next contract.
For the 2016-2017 service
year the annual subscription cost for InfoExpress service will remain at $625
per delivery day. The State Library once again will provide an upfront
subsidy of $525 for the first delivery day for qualifying libraries. This
means that a library's cost for a year's worth of one-day-a-week courier
service is just $100. Public libraries not meeting standards and
privately funded libraries are not eligible for this subsidy. This subsidy is
limited to one library per system. Branches are not eligible for this
subsidy. The cost for these libraries would be the full $625 per day.
Additionally, select
libraries may qualify for an additional $425 Resource Sharing Rate subsidy if
they subscribe to a second day of service. In order to qualify for this
second day subsidy, the library must meet one of the following criteria:
- Subscribes to 5-day-a-week InfoExpress service
- Subscribes to OCLC ILL System
- Is a net lender (Net lending status is defined as when the total number of items lent by a library divided by the total number of items borrowed is greater than 1.0. For public libraries, this figure is automatically computed as a part of the Annual Report.)
-
Is a member of Evergreen Indiana who subscribes to 2 or more days of InfoExpress service.
These are the only subsidies
offered on the courier service. Each additional day of service costs
$625.

Leslie Preddy, school librarian at Perry
Meridian Middle School, has been awarded an Ezra Jack Keats grant to fund an
inventive program for students. She is one of 64 teachers and librarians across
the country, and the only Indiana educator, who received a grant this year.
Mrs. Preddy said, "The Snowy Day is an American classic written and
illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats. It is exciting to receive this grant from the
author's foundation during the celebratory year of the 100th anniversary of the
author's birthday."
With
her award, Mrs. Preddy will build on Perry Township's foundational beliefs in
the connection between literacy, families, student engagement, and school
success with a project developed to strengthen Perry Meridian Middle School's
commitment to community. Through a series of family workshops held during
the 2016-2017 school year, students, along with a significant adult, will
connect with local experts, including a local artist, author, public library,
and independent bookseller to explore the process of publishing in depth. The
family workshop series will conclude with each participant completing their own
Ezra Jack Keats inspired, professionally bound, book.
