On Saturday, March 26, the Indiana State Library hosted a
women’s history conference Hoosier Women at Work. Over 100 people attended this
once-in-a- Bicentennial event to learn about women’s contribution to our great
state’s history. More than 25 speakers from all parts of the state gave talks on
women’s vital contributions through work. Nancy Gabin from Purdue University
gave the lunchtime Keynote “Bossy Ladies: Toward a History of Wage-Earning
Women in Indiana.”
There were sessions on business women’s work, crime and
reformation, and discrimination and compensation for women’s work. In a section
on war production, we learned about the little-known work of Mexican-American
women in Northern Indiana’s steel plants during World War II and the Japanese
War-Brides’ challenges in factory work in the 1950s. We also heard about the
work of college women during war periods and their many efforts to serve
Hoosiers. In the session about the changing attitudes on women’s work, the
presenters spoke about the personal and societal transitions of women’s
“duties” and “place” in history, and how women had always contributed to our
economy through our agricultural heritage. Continuing the theme of agriculture
heritage, one speaker talked about the impact that land cession treaties
between Native American tribes and the US Government had on the nature of the
Miami women’s work. The final session was a panel discussion on the future
access and preservation efforts relating to women’s history. All in all, it was
a fun and informative day!

POV is
television's longest-running showcase for independent nonfiction films,
premiering 14-16 of the best, boldest and most innovative programs every year
on PBS. The films are known for their intimacy, their unforgettable
storytelling and their timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social
issues.
These
award-winning films are available to libraries for free through the POV Community Network. Along
with a DVD of the film, POV provides a discussion guide and suggested reading
list to help librarians facilitate community conversations and provide context
for the film.
In addition
to over 80 films from past POV seasons, documentaries from POV's upcoming
season are available for sneak-preview screenings prior to their debut on PBS. Check out their 29th
Season Line-Up online with dates sneak-preview screening may begin.
POV’s new
season presents unforgettable stories of diverse people — ranging from war
heroes to highly stigmatized criminals — looking to reintegrate into society,
often against great odds. Other films feature heroic attempts to secure justice
and education and to find fulfillment in the final stages of life. This year,
each film poses difficult questions with no clear answers, providing space to
engage your community in a dialogue around the most pressing social issues of
our time. Trailers for the films can be seen here.
The POV Community Engagement and Education team can be reached by
email at events@pov.org or by
phone at 212-989-8121, ext. 318.

The Scholarly Communication
Committee of the Academic Libraries of Indiana (ALI) organization is pleased to
invite you to participate in our second THATCamp on Friday, April 22 at the
Hesburgh Libraries Center for Digital Scholarship at the University of Notre
Dame. Registration, parking, and food are provided by ALI, so this event is
free of charge for all attendees. All you need to do is bring your ideas and
enthusiasm! We strongly encourage librarians, graduate students, archivists,
technologists, faculty members, and anyone interested in learning or talking
about the changing landscape of the humanities to attend. Attendance is limited,
so please register as soon as possible.
THATCamp stands for "The
Humanities and Technology Camp." THATCamps are "unconferences,"
which means that specific sessions will be determined on the day of the camp
and will be based on the interests of the attendees. You can propose sessions
prior to the day of the event, and you are welcome to bring your ideas for
sessions on the day of the camp as well. You can also submit proposals for five
minute "dork shorts" prior to the event. These short presentations
will give you the opportunity to share your ideas, projects, or plans with
attendees.
