Variable Speed Limits to Begin on I-465 SE

Corridor stretches from I-65 to I-70

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 5, 2024)Motorists traveling on I-465 on the southeast side of Indianapolis will soon see variable speed limits (VSLs) in place. Speed limits will adjust based on real-time conditions like traffic, roadway incidents, work zones, and weather conditions. Variable speed limits are expected to begin along the corridor on or after Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Speed limits will be dropped or increased in increments of 5 miles per hour, as conditions warrant, to improve safety and traffic flow. Variable speed limits help manage traffic congestion with fewer stop-and-go situations and a more consistent flow of traffic, reducing travel time for all drivers.

The VSL signs are already in place, with digital signage posted every half mile on both sides of I-465. The standard 55 miles per hour (mph) speed limit is currently posted and will be adjusted in 5 mph increments, as needed, based on conditions. Speed limits may be reduced to as low as 35 mph, if conditions warrant.

Law enforcement officers will be enforcing the posted speed limit. It’s important for drivers to stay alert and responsive to changing road conditions and posted speed limits.

I-465 SE Transportation Systems Management Operations (TSMO)

TSMO is a set of strategies that focuses on operational improvements to maximize the efficiency and safety of existing transportation systems, especially in urban areas where additional space may be limited.

The I-465 SE TSMO project is using TSMO strategies to promote smoother travel and improved safety.  I-465 on the southeast side experiences congestion during peak travel times   contributing to high crash rates.  Improvements include ramp metering that started this spring, the variable speed limit system launching soon, and dynamic message signs already in place.

Dynamic message signs are electronic signs that provide drivers with real-time traffic alerts and information to improve their commute. The signs provide clear and immediate messages to drivers about traffic, road and weather conditions.

Visit INDOT TSMO to learn about these and other TSMO strategies.
