East 71st Street Trail to Reopen Over Labor Day Weekend

Will close next week to install protection system

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 2, 2022) – The East 71^st Street trail is expected to reopen later today for the Labor Day weekend and close temporarily next week to install a bicycle and pedestrian protection system under I-465.

The protection system will greatly reduce the time the multi-use trail is closed during Clear Path construction. Long-term closures were anticipated earlier in the project. Installation of the protection system is expected to close the multi-use trail from Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Friday, Sept. 9. The protection system will look similar to scaffolding installed over city sidewalks during work on high-rise buildings.

Crews are widening the existing bridge over East 71^st Street to support more lanes on I-465. Cranes installed structural steel beams this week along the west side of the bridge.

East 71^st Street remains closed to car and truck traffic, and the detour follows Shadeland Avenue, 75^th Street and Binford Boulevard.
