Phase one of U.S. 20 bridge reconstruction to begin April 18

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Superior Construction Co will move into phase one of the bridge replacement project on the U.S. 20/31 bypass (referred to as U.S. 20) over U.S. 31 on or after Monday, April 18. Both U.S. 20 and U.S. 31 will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

During phase one, the eastbound U.S. 20 bridge will be completely closed to traffic for bridge demolition and reconstruction work. Westbound U.S. 20 traffic will be converted to two-way traffic, and eastbound traffic will utilize the newly placed crossovers to cross the median and utilize the westbound inside lane through the work zone.

While the eastbound bridge is being reconstructed, the ramps from eastbound U.S. 20 to northbound U.S. 31 and southbound U.S. 31 to eastbound U.S. 20 will be closed. These closures will be in place through July.

Overnight road closures will be in place on U.S. 31 under the U.S. 20 bridge for safety reasons during bridge demolition work. These closures will be from approximately 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and are currently scheduled for the evenings of April 19-20, April 20-21, April 21-22, April 22-23, April 25-26, and April 26-27. Northbound U.S. 31 traffic will be diverted to eastbound U.S. 20, and southbound U.S. 31 traffic will be diverted to westbound U.S. 20.

This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change. Work will be ongoing through early December.

INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists should slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.
