Full Callout Planned for Major Snow Event Set to Hit Northwest District on Saturday

NORTHWEST INDIANA – A major winter snow event is set to hit the entire Northwest district Saturday, forecasters say, and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) crews have been busy preparing and will have a full callout of plows on the roads.

Early Saturday morning, this system is expected to move into the southwest portion of the district, quickly spreading throughout the other areas. The southern counties (Newton, Jasper, White, Carroll and Cass) should expect to be hit the hardest with forecasters predicting as much as seven inches of accumulation.

Snow amounts expect to be less further north, but those areas (Lake, Porter, LaPorte and St. Joseph counties) could still see as much as four inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

INDOT will have a full callout in place, with drivers treating the roads with brine in many areas in advance of the storm moving in.

Driver tips

Motorists should limit unnecessary travel, but if you must be on the road, please keep the following in mind:

  • Reduce speeds. Remember, "ice and snow, take it slow." Nobody should be driving summer interstate speeds in winter weather. Plan plenty of time to reach your destination safely and be patient. Don't put yourself and others in a dangerous situation by being in a rush.
  • Keep a safe distance. Make sure your vehicle is following at a safe distance to stop. Do not tailgate, especially around snow plows, and try not to pass. Give snowplows room to work, and "don't crowd the plow."
  • Pay attention. Avoid all distractions and focus only on the task of driving safely. Be aware of your surroundings, drive defensively and be alert for others who are not driving safely.
