Indiana Department of Transportation News Release

All I-465 North Lanes Reopen on the West Side of Indianapolis
Lane Closures on U.S. 36/Rockville Rd. Until Bridge Repairs Completed

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), law enforcement and contractor crews are safely reopening all lanes of I-465 on the west side of Indianapolis. Nearly four miles of I-465 northbound were closed Tuesday morning after a mobile car crusher struck and severely damaged the overhead U.S. 36/Rockville Road bridge.

INDOT contractor Rieth-Riley Construction and their subcontractors were on site within hours, cutting away and demolishing damaged portions of the bridge over I-465 northbound. Large equipment worked through the night and driving rains to reopen I-465 northbound as soon as possible.

Rockville Road lane and ramp closures

U.S. 36/Rockville Road lane closures will remain in place for a few months approaching the I-465 bridge. The collision damaged four of about 14 bridge beams over I-465 northbound, allowing a partial reopening of the bridge.

Two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane remain open for local U.S. 36/Rockville Road access across the I-465 bridge. In addition, the U.S. 36/Rockville Road looping ramp to I-465 northbound will remain closed. INDOT urges commuters and through traffic to use alternate routes unless they are accessing nearby homes or businesses.

INDOT will work with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works to monitor the area and make temporary adjustments to signage and traffic signals as needed to improve traffic flow.

Bridge repairs

INDOT anticipates it will take a few months to reopen the U.S. 36/Rockville Road bridge to all lanes and ramps over I-465 northbound.

New, custom concrete bridge beams must be produced, delivered and erected. Crews must install concrete forms and working platforms before new concrete decking and railings may be poured. Winter temperatures may slow concrete curing times and require special heaters or insulation.

INDOT will keep records to recover taxpayer costs for removal, cleanup and repairs.

INDOT will continue to keep the public updated on repair progress as more precise timelines can be accurately projected.
