US 40 Culvert Construction Begins Next Week

East of Marion-Hancock County Line

INDOT contractors plan to close one lane of U.S. 40 in each direction next week to begin a culvert replacement construction project at Breier Arm Ditch, which is 1.5 miles east of the Marion-Hancock County line between Hancock County Roads 600 and 700 West.

Crews will close the right lanes of eastbound and westbound U.S. 40 and repave the shoulders to prepare for upcoming traffic shifts. This lane closure is scheduled to continue for approximately two weeks.  On or after April 4, one lane of traffic in each direction will be shifted to share the south side of the highway as replacement of the 7-foot by 7-foot concrete box culvert is completed one-half at a time.

After the north half of the new culvert is complete, traffic will be shifted to the north side of the road and work will commence on the south half of the culvert.  The speed limit through the work zone will be reduced to 45 mph.  Construction is expected to be complete and traffic patterns returned to normal before July.

INDOT awarded a contract for the project to Morphey Construction of Indianapolis based on its low bid of $399,534.  Morphey’s bid was the lowest of seven bids.
