Grant funding will support partnership with University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute

 

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Correction has been awarded a nearly $1 million federal grant to improve the use of evidence-based practices and collaboration between community corrections programs across the state.

IDOC’s Community Corrections Division received the $999,989 grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance Innovations in Supervision: Creating Safer Communities Grant program.

The IDOC-Community Corrections Division has implemented various measures to increase adherence to evidence-based practices with individuals under community supervision in an effort to reduce recidivism. Such practices can include using the Correctional Program Assessment Inventory (CPAI), targeting community supervision populations through the Risk, Need, Responsibility (RNR) model and implementation of the Indiana Risk Assessment System (IRAS).

The project will establish a robust assessment process that allows the division to:

  • Implement and validate an evidence-based agency assessment as a systematic and sustainable method for IDOC to evaluate how well community corrections agencies adhere to evidence-based practices. IDOC will use the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute’s (UCCI) Correctional Program Checklist-Community Supervision Agency (CPC-CSA) tool.
  • Ensure that the Community Corrections Division and community corrections agencies share information and promote collaboration amongst criminal justice stakeholders. Indiana has 78 community corrections agencies, covering 89 of the 92 counties.
