Correctional Industrial Facility’s Wheels for the World ships wheelchairs to Uganda

Pendleton, Ind.
- The Correctional Industrial Facility (CIF) sent out their latest shipment of refurbished wheelchairs for the Wheels for the World program. This shipment of 240 wheelchairs was sent to Uganda where they make an immediate impact in the lives of the recipients. Since the programs inception at CIF, wheelchairs have been sent to Palestine, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ukraine, El Salvador, Romania, Jordan and the latest shipment to Uganda.

Warden Wendy Knight said, “Since we first opened our shop in August 2013, we have proudly shipped over 3,500 wheelchairs to impoverished countries around the world. Each chair represents a life that has been dramatically improved by the increased mobility these chairs provide.”

Wheels for the World provides life-changing mobility along with the hope of the Gospel to people impacted by disability around the world. The process involves four phases: collection, transportation, restoration, and distribution.

Chair Corps, a nationwide network of volunteers, collects, wheelchairs that are used but restorable  and transports them to restoration shops located in correctional facilities, including CIF. From there, offenders restore them to their original usefulness. Finally, Disability Specialists fit each wheelchair to a recipient’s need and provide them with training in its use and upkeep, and a Bible in their language.

In some of these countries the cost of a wheelchair can equal a year's wages, making it almost impossible for those affected by disability to ever receive one.
