Wabash Valley Correctional Facility PLUS program Brightening the Holiday Season for Area Youth
Carlisle, Ind.- The residents of Wabash Valley Correctional Facility's (WVCF) Purposeful Living Unit Serve (PLUS) Program have been busy making a host of items for the Miriam Home in Switz City, Indiana. The PLUS program is a faith and character-based community that encourages offenders to choose an alternative to criminal thinking and behavior.
The home is operated by Open Arms Christian Ministries, a non-profit organization that works to impact the lives of area youth. The mission of the home is to provide troubled girls with the structure and support they need to help take control of their lives. Open Arms believes that to change behavior, you must first change an individual's mindset.
Julie Morehouse of Open Arms said, "I would like to thank Wabash Valley Correctional Facility and the residents of the PLUS Program for all of the gifts they made for our residents. The effort that was put into making these items for our girls has affected every one of them. All too often, we overlook the impact a small gesture can have on someone. Dealing with residents in the home that are separated from their families through the holidays is difficult to say the least, as it must be for the inmates as well, and seeing the reaction of the girls yesterday is what Christmas is about. Showing the girls that their life matters to strangers are powerful and I can’t begin to thank you enough for giving them that moment."
About PLUS:
To successfully graduate from the PLUS program, participants must work together to complete the required course work and community service. Giving back to the community in ways such as this, helps the participants learn compassion for the needs of others.
