Offenders Learn Skills to Become Better Fathers

Carlisle, Ind.- In October offenders at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF) were enthusiastic to attend a fatherhood program.  The course is designed to help participants establish a more meaningful relationship with their children.

The fact that a significant percentage of those incarcerated report having minor children emphasizes the need for life skills programs of this nature.  The Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) continually assesses all aspects related to re-entry to help released persons successfully reintegrate into society.  Strong family ties are a key component.  This is why programs for incarcerated persons are available to help maintain and strengthen relationships with their family while incarcerated.  These are the bonds which will ultimately form the framework for a successful re-entry.

Caseworker Steve Miller recently facilitated his first group session with the Inside/Out Dads Program and commented, “The response of the group was extremely positive. I have already received multiple requests from clients who want to be a part of future group sessions.”
