Rockville Correctional Facility Offenders Donate $3,603 to Ronald McDonald House

Rockville, Ind. – Offenders at the Rockville Correctional Facility (RCF) recently took part in a fundraising effort to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Central Indiana.

This fundraiser came from a suggestion by Offender Judith Walker.  Judith is studying Cosmetology at RCF through Oakland City University (OCU) and is expected to graduate as a Licensed Cosmetologist in the State of Indiana, enabling her to secure gainful employment upon release from incarceration.  Together with RCF staff, Judy helped identify a quality Panasonic Women’s Electric Shaver that was offered for sale to the offender population.  Offenders made the purchase with the knowledge that a portion of the proceeds would be donated to the Ronald McDonald House of Central Indiana. Through their electric shaver purchases RCF offenders raised $3,603.60 in donations.

The Ronald McDonald House holds special significance for the RCF offender population, many of whom are mothers themselves.  Even when incarcerated many mothers maintain the maternal instinct which naturally lends itself to helping others, especially children in need.

Additionally, approximately 51 pounds of pop tabs, the little device attached to aluminum beverage cans to help open the can, were collected by RCF offenders and staff.  Ronald McDonald House charities nationwide encourage collecting and donating these tabs as the funds generated from recycling help offset operational expenditures.

About Ronald McDonald House

Established in 1982, and located in Indianapolis, Indiana, on the campus of Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Ronald McDonald House provides a supportive “home-away-from-home” for families of children receiving medical care at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health and other area hospitals.  The house offers families restful areas for sleep, children’s play, kitchens, and dining, all without creating additional financial burdens for the family.  Support for the house is derived from donations from local McDonald Restaurant owner/operators, and the community.
