Career Correctional Employee Retires After 39 Years
Indianapolis, Ind. - Cecil Davis was offered many greetings of 'thanks and job well done' at his retirement celebration, held earlier today in recognition of his 39 years of dedicated service to the Indiana Department of Correction.
Cecil Davis began his career with the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) as a Correctional Officer at the Westville Correctional Facility in October of 1981. Over the course of his career Cecil held the positions of Correctional Sergeant, Correctional Counselor, Superintendent, Northern Regional Director, and Deputy Commissioner of Operations. He concluded his career as Division of Youth Services’ Director of Operations.
Prior to joining the IDOC Cecil served in the United States Army from January 1973 to 1975 and is a graduate of Indiana University, holding a Bachelors of General Studies. Also prior to starting his IDOC career Cecil was a police officer and Chief of the Chapmanville, West Virginia Police Department from March 1977 to 1980
Like many before him, Cecil didn't think of corrections as a life-long career when he started with the IDOC. "I stayed with the department of correction because I enjoyed making a difference in the lives of the people in our facilities and the comradery with other staff." When asked what he will miss the most, Cecil shared this reflection, "The most enjoyable part of my career has been working with juveniles." Davis continued, "It’s with them that you have the best chance to significantly alter the path they are on by showing the way to a better path to follow. It was very fulfilling to see so many youth evolve while working with them and pointing out the opportunity for a better future."
Cecil shared he's looking forward to golfing, fishing, camping, sleeping later and jumping on the trampoline with his 3 year-old grandson. He had these final words of wisdom and advice: “Seek first to understand and then to be understood by others”. He also reminded us to communicate often and continuously evaluate our results.
Congratulations Cecil, you will be missed!
