RCF's Recreation Coordinator is

Courage Award Recipient

Rockville, Ind. – Rockville Correctional Facility is pleased to announce Recreation Coordinator Brad Gray as a recipient of IDOC Commissioner Carter’s “Courage Award”. During this time of uncertainty and confusion brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Commissioner Rob Carter, in collaboration with the Department’s Staff Development and Training Department, looked to identify and recognize staff throughout the organization who show true leadership by, in part, putting forth ground-breaking ideas and/or solutions.

Brad was recognized for his persistent promotion of the CDC’s precaution guidelines for the coronavirus. He, along with support from his staff, designed and placed multiple posters throughout the facility constantly reminding all to wash our hands and wear our masks. Also, a large, affecting poster is hanging in an area seen by most staff on a daily basis. With the support and approval of Gray, this poster was designed and drawn by two offenders as a thank you to staff. In addition to the posters, an informational slideshow runs on the TVs in the housing units, along with a loop-video that plays in the Recreation building showing CDC instructional clips in both English and Spanish.

When asked by administration to make significant changes effecting the usual daily operations of the Recreation Department Brad not only complied, but eagerly stepped-up to put measures in place for the good of the entire facility at the expense of his department’s activities. When reflecting upon Brad’s contributions Deputy Warden Pam Ferguson commented, “From the beginning of the pandemic, Brad was one of the first to say, what do you need me to do?  He has never hesitated for one minute to assist in every way and I am very certain he goes home at night thinking about the one more thing he can do.  RCF is very fortunate to have Brad Gray on our team.”

Brad’s innovative ideas have made these reminders a part of our daily landscape that encourages both staff and offenders to keep doing the right thing in the fight against the COVID-19 virus. His actions make him a Courage Award winner.
