Indiana State Prison Delivers Masks to Local Charities

Michigan City, Ind. – Warden Ron Neal from Indiana State Prison delivered face masks to three local charities. The charities receiving the face masks were A Hands Up, Stepping Stones and Meals on Wheels.

All of the individuals were very appreciative for the gift of the face masks. The masks will go towards helping the community in many different demographics including the elderly, the homeless, and females with children who may be removed from their home because of an assault.

Warden Neal stated, “This was a great opportunity to support the residents of Michigan City and show we are in this together. We were able to protect local residents during an emergency situation from this health crisis while they are dealing with other issues in their lives.”

Background

As widely reported, face masks have been in short supply for health professionals as well as for the public.  This is why the Indiana Department of Correction began, and continues to manufacture face masks in prison facilities.  As of April 17, 2020 face masks have been supplied to each IDOC prison facility.  All 27,000 offenders and 6,000 staff have received a mask. IDOC continues to produce masks. This donation has not interrupted the supply chain of personal protective equipment to IDOC facilities.

A Hand Up charity helps the homeless and low income individuals.  Stepping Stone is a 24-hour shelter service for all victims of sexual assault/sexual violence.  The shelter also has a transitional housing facility. Meals on Wheels delivers meal to individuals shut in and the elderly.
