Weekly Review for Feb. 14, 2020
This informal report by the Division of Entomology and Plant Pathology is designed to update the Nursery and Greenhouse industry of insect and disease pests the Division has been encountering on a week to week basis and as a way to give a “heads up” of things to be on the lookout for. Comments and questions about this report are welcome and can be sent to your respective Inspector.
We would like to remind everyone that the State of Indiana will begin enforcing our Terrestrial Plant Rule (312 IAC 18-3-25) effective April 18, 2020. This rule prohibits the sale, trade, or distribution of 44 species of plants. The rule and a full list of species regulated can be found online.
The prohibited plants most likely to affect your nurseries are Berberis thunbergii (barberry) and Euonymus fortunei (wintercreeper euonymus). Please note that there is no distinguishing between cultivars within these species.
As a point of clarification to some questions we have received, while common buckthorn is on the list, Rhamnus frangula (Fine Line Buckthorn) is not restricted under this rule.
Shippers and receivers can and will be subject to enforcement of this rule with a notice of violation that may entail a monetary fine or destruction of plant material. If you have questions about this rule, please contact your nursery inspector or call the central office at 317-232-4189.
We would also like to remind you that the Aquatic Plant Rule (312 IAC 18-3-23) prohibits the sale, trade, or distribution of 30 invasive aquatic plants species. Details of that rule can be found here.
