Grow your backyard habitat
The best way you can help wildlife is to keep them wild and provide excellent habitat for them.
Native wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees are ideal landscaping choices for wildlife. These plants provide both direct and indirect sources of food by bearing edible fruit, leaves, and host sites for insects eaten by songbirds and other animals. As the planting season starts, consider incorporating native plants on your landscape.
Upcoming guided field day hikes
Hike as many as you like or all of them.
This year, the Division of Nature Preserves is teaming with some of its partner organizations and land trusts to hold a series of hikes on nature preserves. We hope you can join us to see some of Indiana’s finest natural areas.
Attendance is free, but registration is required.
Remember firewood rule when camping
With the arrival of camping season, visitors to DNR properties can help prevent the spread of invasive species by following the DNR firewood rule.
Under the rule, visitors to state parks, reservoirs, state forests, and state fish & wildlife areas can bring firewood from home—as long as the bark has been removed. Removing the bark minimizes the risk of accidental infestation through firewood movement, because insect larvae live in sapwood under the bark.
Crew Captain workshop, May 9
Are you an educator or youth leader wanting to bring fishing into your classroom or community? Attend this free Crew Captain workshop and learn how. You'll get access to equipment and materials to help.
Remember to clean, drain, and dry this boating season
As the weather warms and more people get out on their boats, the DNR reminds boaters to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species by cleaning, draining, and drying their watercraft when they are finished on the water.
Catfish stocked for urban anglers
From May 13-17, the DNR will be stocking catchable-size channel catfish at family-friendly parks across the state. The stockings are part of DNR’s urban fishing program, GoFishIN in the City.
