FEMA is again offering course “L273 Managing Floodplain Development through the National Flood Insurance Program” in Indiana. FEMA Region V Staff (Chicago) will be conducting the in-depth training course, with assistance from the Indiana DNR.

If you are involved with floodplain issues in your community, this training is immensely valuable. It will provide you with thorough training on the basics of the National Flood Insurance Program. If you are a CFM (and have not previously taken this course), you will earn continuing education credits.

Dates: Aug. 21-24. This course runs four consecutive days. To obtain credit and receive a certificate of completion, participants will be expected to be present for the entire four days.

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, ET.

Course description: This course is designed to provide an organized training opportunity for local officials responsible for administering their local floodplain ordinances. The course will focus on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and concepts of floodplain management, maps and studies, ordinance administration, and the relationship between floodplain management and flood insurance. Hands-on exercises are included to allow participants to better apply the information in their communities.

Selection criteria: This course is beneficial to local officials responsible for administering local floodplain-management ordinances, including but not limited to floodplain-management administrators, building inspectors, code-enforcement/zoning officers, planners, city/county managers, attorneys, engineers, and public-works officials. Federal/state/regional floodplain managers also are encouraged to attend. This course is designed for those officials with limited floodplain-management experience.

Location: The course will be held at the Hendricks County Government Center, Meeting Rooms 4 & 5, at 355 South Washington Street, Danville, IN.

Parking: Free parking is available in the parking lots on the north and south side of the Hendricks County Government Center.

Lodging: There are numerous hotels in the area and on the west side of Indianapolis. Lodging costs are not included with registration.

Meals/Snacks: There are several nearby restaurants. Meals and/or snacks are not included with registration.

Continuing education credits: 12 CECs for CFMs (exceptions if repeating the course).

Student ID Number (SID): To reduce the risk of identity theft, FEMA, the National Fire Academy (NFA), and the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) are eliminating the use of the Social Security Number (SSN), where possible, when applying for training. FEMA has implemented the use of a Student Identification (SID) number. You will be required to obtain and use the SID in applying for NFA or EMI courses. This number will be used in place of the SSN on your application.

The FEMA application and exams for the L-273 course will require the SID. If you do not yet have an SID from any earlier trainings, you will need to register for one.

Pre-requisites: Participants are recommended to complete the following online tutorials:

1. Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) tutorial at https://www.floodmaps.fema.gov/tutorials/ot_firm.swf (30 minutes)

2. Flood Insurance Studies (FIS) tutorial at https://www.floodmaps.fema.gov/tutorials/ot_fis.swf (40 minutes)

Registration: No registration fees are being charged for this course; however, space is limited to the first 30 to register. Please register by no later than July 31, 2018. If you do not have a PSID, you will need to obtain a PSID number in order to register.
