Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience returns! 

The Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience returns June 10-11 to Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis.

The event is designed to introduce outdoor activities to visitors who have never tried them. Watch the video below to see some of the activities, including fishing, mountain biking, archery, and target shooting.

Admission, parking and all activities are free. Food vendors will be available, or you can bring a sack lunch.

See what’s new at Indiana’s state parks this year 

The summer recreational season is approaching, and Indiana State Parks is working hard to make sure visitors have a great experience.

The system of 24 parks and eight reservoir properties has finished, or will complete this year, hundreds of improvements to enhance campgrounds, restrooms and trails.

New state ORV helmet law takes effect July 1 

Effective July 1, state law will require children under age 18 to wear an approved helmet when riding any off-road vehicle (ORV) on public or private property in Indiana, including Interlake and Redbird state recreation areas.

Guided Hike at Mounds Fen Nature Preserve

Take a walk back in time with a review of the forests, wetlands, and earthworks of Mounds State Park.

This special hike celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Division of Nature Preserves.

Mounds Fen Nature Preserve protects a high-quality example of upland forests, floodplain forests, and fen wetlands.

Governor proclaims Trails Day

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb has declared Trails Day to be Saturday, June 3. Indiana will once again join the country in celebrating National Trails Day, an annual day to recognize America’s wonderful trails system and the many benefits it provides. Hoosiers can do this on their own or at numerous special National Trails Day events going on throughout the state.

NRC approves two new nature preserves 

The Natural Resources Commission (NRC) approved two new nature preserves during its May meeting.

The move increases to 279 the number of state-designated sites protected by the Nature Preserves Act, which is 50 years old this year.

Night Ride planned at Redbird SRA

On June 24-25, Redbird SRA (Linton, IN) will host a Night Ride open to all types of off-road vehicles (ORV). All Redbird trails will be open from dawn June 24 through dusk June 25. The fee for the night ride is $25.
 
The Redbird Foundation will host several vendors during the night ride. Local organizations, food vendors, and ORV-specific displays will be on site. Additional plans are in the works.

2017 spring turkey harvest was third highest 

Indiana hunters harvested more than 13,000 wild turkeys during the 2017 spring wild turkey season. This is a 7-percent increase from the 12,081 turkeys taken during the 2016 spring season and the third-highest spring turkey harvest on record.
