This informal report by the Division of Entomology and Plant Pathology is designed to update the Nursery and Greenhouse industry of insect and disease pests the Division has been encountering on a week to week basis and as a way to give a “heads up” of things to be on the lookout for.

Kristy and I had the opportunity to travel to McKay Nursery near Madison, Wisconsin for the HIS Multistate Inspection last week. McKay is one of the first nurseries in the country to be certified using the Systems Approach to Nursery Certification (SANC). This meeting allowed us the opportunity to talk to McKay employees and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture staff about the process of SANC certification.

SANC was developed by the National Plant Board in cooperation with the USDA as a voluntary process to facilitate interstate movement of nursery stock and improve the overall quality of plant material in trade. This process involves a thorough review of nursery procedures, identification of critical control points (entry points for pests and diseases), and development of audit processes (internal and external) to make sure procedures are being followed.

SANC started in 2014 with the 8 US nurseries which are currently finishing up certifications. Another 12 nurseries nationwide expected to start the process within a year or so. While the emphasis of this program is on nurseries that ship interstate, this program is designed to be scalable to operations of all shapes and sizes. In the next couple of years, I’m sure you will be hearing more about the SANC program. For more information on SANC, visit sanc.nationalplantboard.org or send me an email.

This past week I was in Tippecanoe and Fountain counties. In a backyard nursery with perennials and woody material in containers, the following insect pests/injury was found. Heavy flea beetle injury on Japanese lantern (Phylalis alkekengi), and Japanese beetles were found on grape vines in containers. On the dogwood cuttings I found feeding injury and when looking at the mother plant, there were a number of dogwood sawfly larvae under the leaves (see photo). General leaf spots were found on various plant material. In a walnut nursery, lace bugs were found on the foliage – injury was scattered and light to moderate. Powdery mildew was localized with light injury. In an apple tree nursery, which I inspect because of scions being exported overseas, scattered fireblight, applescab, and leaf scorch were the major issues.

Now that the State Fair has concluded another successful run, it was time to tear down two displays that the Division of Entomology had at this year’s fair: The Invasive Species Booth and the Butterfly Display inside the butterfly garden. We had met a lot of visitors who had lots of questions about invasive species. The display included not only pamphlets for handouts, but also live invasive plants for all the visitors to see. The butterfly display had over 1,000 butterflies, including monarchs, painted ladies, mourning cloaks, swallowtails, and fritillaries. This year we had the opportunity to notice monarch larvae and also a monarch chrysalis on the milkweed in our display (see images). At the end of the fair we release the butterflies as they are all natives.
