NRC drops deer rifle, sunfish proposals
The Indiana Natural Resources Commission (NRC) authorized certain fee changes for some DNR properties and gave final approval to a package of fish and wildlife rules after dropping three proposals in that rule package. The proposals that were removed from the fish and wildlife package would have expanded the use of high-powered rifles for deer hunting, placed a statewide 25-fish daily bag limit on sunfish (i.e., bluegill), and allowed landowners to provide oral permission instead of requiring written permission for another individual to take coyotes from the landowner’s property. Bluegill fishing returns to Kunkel Lake
Bluegill fishing is picking up at Kunkel Lake in Ouabache State Park due to a successful DNR fish eradication and restocking project.
Before the renovation, the 25-acre impoundment in Wells County was overrun by carp, small bluegills and crayfish. The water was muddy and aquatic plants were sparse.
To remove the unwanted fish and improve fish habitat, DNR officials lowered the water level in Sept. 2013 and treated the remaining pools with rotenone, a fish toxicant.
The lake was then refilled and stocked in March 2014 with 19,000 bluegills and 5,200 largemouth bass. An additional 2,600 channel catfish were added last fall.
The project was funded through fishing license revenue. Find out more

DNR grants address sediment, logjams
Five Indiana counties will fix sediment and logjam problems in lakes and rivers thanks to $320,900 in grant funding this spring from the DNR.
The grants are part of the Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) program in DNR’s Division of Fish & Wildlife.
The projects selected for spring 2015 involve 11 lakes and three rivers. They were selected in a competitive process from among applications submitted by local sponsors. The grantees must share at least 20 percent of the cost. Read more
DNR studies Clear Lake trout stocking
DNR biologists are conducting a study at Clear Lake in Steuben County to try to understand why one of the best trout fishing spots in northern Indiana is declining.
Approximately 20 percent of trout stocked into the lake have been tagged just below the dorsal fin with a small “spaghetti” tag.
Anglers who catch tagged trout are encouraged to return the tags to the tag return station at either the DNR public access site or Clear Lake Marina. Read more
