Carmel Fire Department awarded federal grant in support of health, safety
CARMEL, Ind., Oct. 2, 2025 - The Carmel Fire Department (CFD) has been awarded federal funds to equip all fire stations with devices that enhance public health and safety for both firefighters and the public.
The $400,000 grant, which will be boosted with a 10% match from CFD, was awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to purchase and install Source Capture Exhaust Systems (SCES) for all emergency response vehicles.
The grant addresses a critical need identified during an internal risk and needs assessment by CFD which highlighted the absence of SCES as a threat to the health and safety of firefighters. Prior systems used by CFD to reduce harmful particles became outdated due to technological changes in fire trucks and other vehicles. And, while the department additionally implemented other proactive measures in the interest of safety, the SCES fully reduces the risks associated with exhaust exposure.
"We have maintained a strong commitment to the wellbeing of our firefighters,” Chief Joel Thacker said. “The grant funding is essential to further supporting the health and safety of our firefighters."
Installation of the SCES units is expected to be complete by March 2026 with personnel trained on the proper usage of the new systems.
