DETAILS: The City of Carmel will formally unveil the City's newest sculpture, "Taking Flight," at the roundabout at Main Street and Richland Avenue.
The sculpture, crafted from steel, aluminum and LED with a reinforced concrete footing, stands approximately 25 feet tall and more than 12 feet in diameter. It depicts an upsweep of books taking flight, a fitting image given its intentional placement at the roundabout in front of the Carmel Clay Public Library and Carmel High School.
Jason Klimoski, artist, principal and co-founder of the award-winning architecture and design firm STUDIOKCA, who will be present at the event, explains that the "sculpture is based on the concept of the library as a nodal point within the city where information flows out of and into the community. The piece shapes steel and aluminum to look like hundreds of books have suddenly taken flight and are swirling around, up and out from the center point of the roundabout. At night, a small light emanating from each "book" makes the sculpture take on a magical glow."
The contract with STUDIOKCA was approved by the Carmel Redevelopment Commission in November 2023.
