Carmel Chief of Police Drake Sterling named to Indianapolis Business Journal's Forty Under 40
CARMEL, Ind., April 10, 2025 - The City of Carmel is proud to announce that Chief of Police Drake Sterling has been named to the Indianapolis Business Journal's prestigious Forty Under 40 list for 2025, recognizing his outstanding leadership in law enforcement and dedicated community service.
Chief Sterling, who has served as Carmel's Chief of Police since February 2024, was selected for his exemplary professional achievements and significant community impact. Under his leadership, the Carmel Police Department has implemented one of Indiana's pioneering Drone First Responder programs, making it only the second department in the state and among just 25 nationwide to utilize drones as first responders. Chief Sterling has also developed a comprehensive officer wellness initiative that includes a Critical Incident Unit and Peer Officer Support Team providing immediate support to officers exposed to potentially traumatic situations.

"Chief Sterling exemplifies the kind of leadership we value in Carmel – innovative, community-focused and forward-thinking," said Mayor Sue Finkam. "His ability to advance public safety through technology while simultaneously prioritizing officer wellness and community connections has strengthened our police department and our city. This recognition is well-deserved and we're fortunate to have him leading our police force during this time of growth and innovation."
Prior to joining the Carmel Police Department, Sterling served with the Zionsville Police Department from 2010 to 2023, rising from police officer to captain while earning both the prestigious Life Saving Award and multiple Chief's Awards of Excellence. As captain, he oversaw critical initiatives including the implementation of the department's mental health response unit and managed aspects of criminal and internal investigations.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sterling has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community service. He currently serves on multiple executive boards including the Carmel Youth Assistance Program, Carmel Clay Heroes Club, Hamilton County Community Corrections and the Indiana Crime Gun Task Force. His dedication to youth mentorship is evidenced by his nearly decade-long commitment to coaching high school track and field, which earned him recognition as an Indiana Association of Track and Field Coach of the Year nominee.
“Throughout both my personal and professional journey, I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by incredible mentors and supporters," said Chief Sterling. "While I’m truly humbled to receive this recognition, I know that my success is a direct result of those who have guided and supported me along the way. I am immensely proud to work alongside the dedicated men and women of the Carmel Police Department, who represent the absolute best in our profession. Our department continually tries to build strong relationships with the community and deploy innovative technology and techniques, and this award further fuels my commitment to advancing this mission. I’m deeply grateful to Mayor Finkam for granting me the privilege to lead and serve such an outstanding community.”
Chief Sterling is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy and holds academic credentials from Vincennes University, Indiana State University and the University of Virginia.
