March is National Disability
Awareness Month
CARMEL, IN – The City of Carmel is observing National Disability Awareness Month in March and will be part of several special events.
To kick off the month, the city is hosting Community Sensory Day. Event details include:

Saturday, March 2
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
- Free snack items courtesy of BraunAbility
- Giveaways and sensory activities
- Carmel Advisory Committee on Disability video screening at 10:45 a.m.
- Movie screening at 11 a.m. with closed captions
- Virtual Art Exhibition launches on the Midtown Screen at 1 p.m.

The virtual art exhibition organized by the Carmel Advisory Committee on Disability (CACD) in partnership with the Carmel Arts Council features local artists of all ages and disabilities. The art is featured on the Carmel Arts Council website and will continue to be shared on the Midtown Screen throughout the month of March.
In addition, OneZone is hosting a special event March 13 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at FORUM Events Center. The luncheon will have a panel of different business owners who have prioritized hiring individuals with disabilities and giving tips to other businesses in attendance on how they can implement similar practices. At the end, individuals with disabilities will be at tables in the lobby for a reverse job fair, so that employers can talk to people who are actively seeking employment. These initiatives were made possible with the help of members of the Carmel Advisory Committee on Disability and others who live and work in Carmel.
The CACD was established in December of 2019 for the purpose of fostering a culture of inclusivity within the City of Carmel. This Committee represents the diverse needs and interests of disabled people, provides comment on the city’s current services, policies and practices and provides informed input on the development and assessment of future city projects and services that impact people with disabilities. The Committee also works with local employers encouraging them to hire more people with disabilities and helping create positive social activities to enrich the lives of people with disabilities, their families and caregivers.
