Mayor Brainard and Council present special award and proclamation at November 20 City Council meeting
Range Line Pioneer Award
At the November 20 City Council meeting, Mayor Jim Brainard presented Mo Merhoff with the Range Line Pioneer Award for her many contributions to the Carmel community and Indiana as a whole. Merhoff's experience and lengthy list of accomplishments includes graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Purdue University, executive directorship of the 1994 World Rowing Championships in Indianapolis, serving as Olympic Press Officer at three Olympic Games and 10 World Rowing Championships and, most recently, heading up Carmel's Chamber of Commerce for 20 years. Before her retirement during the pandemic, Merhoff successfully merged the Carmel and Fishers chambers into OneZone.
Mayor Jim Brainard presents Mo Merhoff with the Range Line Pioneer Award with from left to right: Councilors Sue Finkam, Adam Aasen, Jeff Worrell, Kevin "Woody" Rider, Teresa Ayers, Tony Green and Laura Campbell.
"A chamber of commerce in a city is important to its advancement," said Mayor Jim Brainard. He added that chambers help work out issues with the business community and promote businesses in that community, which in turn creates good jobs leading to economic development and quality growth. Mayor Brainard stated that Merhoff's willingness to sit down as friends to hash out issues and her spirit of partnership, innovation and creativity helped to make Carmel a much better place.
The Range Line Pioneer Award was established in 1992. It is conferred to a person who lives in or out of the community who has been a friend to the city.
Recognition of Hindu American Awareness Month Proclamation
The Council also recognized a Proclamation made in October for Hindu American Awareness Month, with a presentation by Avika Garg, a Carmel resident and student at College Wood Elementary School. Along with her mother Pooja Garg (pictured), Avika shared a message about Diwali, the most important Hindu holiday celebrated over five days in October or November.
Avika explained that the celebrating of Diwali includes lighting oil lamps called diyas, shooting fireworks and exchanging gifts and sweets with friends and family. Avika finished her presentation with this statement: "This proclamation is special and symbolizes the support that the city provides embracing diversity and makes all citizens welcome and the part of the fabric of America."

Recycle campaign signs through November 30
Carmel Utilities and the Carmel Street Department are partnering with the Hamilton County Household Hazardous Waste Center and Recycle Force to recycle campaign signs generated from the 2023 election seasons. This recycling initiative prevents an abundance of yard signs going to a local landfill as they cannot be recycled in regular curbside pickup. If residents do not plan on returning their campaign signs to individual candidates, they are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to recycle.
