Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard appointed to the Board of Governors for prestigious Florida-based institute
Mayor Jim Brainard has been selected as a new Governor of the Seaside Institute, a Florida-based organization that promotes the building of sustainable places across the globe through education and design. Mayor Brainard's term begins immediately.
"I am very honored to be invited onto this prestigious Board of Governors that includes many distinguished scholars and advocates of the movement to build walkable, livable and sustainable communities around the world," said Brainard.

Carmel establishes new Sister City relationship with Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India
The City of Carmel has a new Sister City relationship with Visakhapatnam, a city in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Mayor Jim Brainard joined an international virtual meeting on Tuesday, July 26, with Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari, who serves as Mayor of Visakhapatnam, to sign a memorandum of understanding that formally establishes the relationship. Saikanth Varma, Commissioner of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, Raju Chinthala, President of Indiana India Business Council and Pavan Varma Resident of Carmel also joined the signing ceremony.
This is Carmel's fifth international Sister City relationship. Prior to this, Carmel had established similar relationships with Kawachinagano, Osaka, Japan; Xiangyang, Hubei, China; Jelgava, Latvia; and Cortona, Italy.

Traffic and Construction Updates
SPRING MILL ROAD CLOSURE - Beginning on or after Tuesday, August 8, there will be a five-day closure on Spring Mill Road between Hamlet Drive and 116th Street to construct a new entrance into the Jackson's Grant subdivision. The morning of August 8, both directions of Spring Mill Road will be closed to through traffic. Before the end of that work day, northbound Spring Mill will be reopened and remain open for the duration of the work. Southbound Spring Mill will be closed for the duration of the five-day project. Detour routes will use Illinois Street, Main Street and 116th Street.

HAZEL DELL PARKWAY - Carmel Utilities will be cleaning a sanitary pipe in Hazel Dell Parkway's northbound lane just south of East Main Street starting Tuesday, August 8 at midnight and continuing through the next four days. Work will be performed during low traffic and low sanitary flow times (midnight to 7 a.m.). The map below indicates the work area in red. Traffic will be maintained in the eastern northbound lane of Hazel Dell Parkway, shown in green.
This will not result in a closure of Hazel Dell Parkway. The work will occur during the evening and early morning so as to be less impactful to area residents and daily commuters.

Participate in Purdue University electric vehicle study
Researchers at Purdue University are looking for adult Indiana residents, who currently own/lease or in the past have owned/leased an electric vehicle, to participate in a research study. The purpose of the study is to better understand public perceptions and expectations regarding electric vehicles and the public's willingness to pay for different charging options.

Midtown's Got Talent auditions open through August 12
There is still time to submit your auditions for the fourth annual Midtown’s Got Talent event presented by Allied Solutions.
We are looking for talented and entertaining vocalists and musicians, age 10 and older, with stage presence and charisma. Contestants selected by judges based on their video auditions will compete in youth, teen or adult categories. The judges are searching for participants who can “wow” them with their audition tapes and entertain live audiences at the event at Midtown Plaza. Contestants will be competing for up to $500 in cash prizes.

The City of Carmel Utilities is proud to present the Carmel Citizens Utility Academy, providing insight to the public on the responsibilities and operations of Water, Wastewater, Trash & Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Disposal services. The Academy is free and open to Carmel residents, with sessions presented by staff members of Carmel Utilities.

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation wants to hear from you!
Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation invites the community to participate in an online survey to provide input for the 2024-2028 comprehensive parks and recreation master plan. The survey is open now and will remain open through August 23, 2023.
The survey is an opportunity for the public to share feedback on the Parks Department's current offerings as well as new park and recreation opportunities. The survey results will be incorporated into the final master plan.
Every five years, the department develops a new parks and recreation master plan utilizing internal assessment, data collection and community input to help determine how to best serve an ever-changing and growing community. This feedback allows the Parks Department to create a snapshot in time of the wants and needs of its residents.

Calling all teen artists!
Carmel Cortona Sister Cities Committee sponsoring new art contest to honor Renaissance painter Luca Signorelli
Attention young teen artists! The Carmel Cortona Sister Cities Committee has launched a contest for artistic painters ages 14-19 who can create a piece of art that pays honor to Luca Signorelli, an Italian Renaissance painter from Carmel's Sister City, Cortona, Italy. On the 500th anniversary of Signorelli’s death, a highly anticipated “Signorelli 500” exhibit has been planned in Cortona and the young artists of Carmel will have their winning selections included alongside of others in Cortona.
Cash prizes will be paid to the winning artists. The works will be judged here in Carmel and the first-place winner will receive a $200 cash prize. Second place will receive $100 and third place will receive $50. Winning artwork will also be displayed in Carmel.
Who was Luca Signorelli? The artist is a much celebrated and revered citizen of Cortona. The students from Luca Signorelli Higher Education Institute of Cortona filmed, wrote and produced a video about the artist. This link takes you to the video.
