Mayor Jim Brainard recognized as Hoosier Resilience Hero
In advance of Earth Day, Mayor Jim Brainard has been named a Hoosier Resilience Hero by Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute (ERI).
For 27 years, Brainard has championed climate-friendly and sustainable initiatives as the elected leader of the City of Carmel. With Brainard’s support, Carmel became the first Indiana city to pass a climate resolution in 2017; the city adopted its first climate action plan in 2022. Brainard, a member of ERI’s Indiana advisory board, has worked to balance Carmel’s growth with its environmental footprint, promoting urban development that encourages walking and biking and replacing more than 100 traditional intersections with roundabouts, a change that has reduced the city’s carbon emissions by an estimated 28,000 tons annually. Other policy initiatives executed under Brainard’s leadership have advanced adoption of alternative fuel vehicles, energy-efficient lighting, clean energy, and recycling. In 2019, Brainard was chosen as one of 24 city leaders to serve on the steering committee for Climate Mayors, a network of more than 400 mayors who have committed to upholding the Paris Climate Agreement.

Construction and Traffic
VETERANS WAY AND MAIN STREET -The final phase of the burial of transmission lines has begun in the Carmel Arts & Design District and will force the temporary closure of a half-block stretch of Veterans Way, south of Main Street. The transmission burial project began in 2015 and included the conduit along the Veterans Way corridor from Carmel Drive to just north of Main Street. The current closure is expected to last about four weeks and will be limited to daytime hours and some weekends. Access to the public parking lot located south of the Main Street shops will remain open
CITY CENTER DRIVE AND VETERANS WAY ROUNDABOUT - The construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of City Center Drive and Veterans Way - in front of Carmel City Center - is underway. The City is working to install new infrastructure as part of the project including storm sewers, water main, sanitary sewer, communications conduit, asphalt pavement, path, lighting and raised crosswalks within the right-of way.
This project is under a partial road closure with an expected completion date of June 30, 2023. Construction is taking place on City Center Drive between 3rd Avenue SW and Range Line Road. City Center Drive will experience periodic traffic flow restrictions and detours during times of construction. Driveways will be accessible for local traffic, and the City will work to maintain access throughout the duration of the project.

Timber Creek Fire
The Carmel Fire Department responded to a major fire this week at a condominium building off Timber Creek Drive and City Center Drive. The two-alarm blaze was very destructive but there were no deaths or serious injuries among residents.
Many thanks to fire crews from the Westfield and Fishers fire departments who assisted and also big thanks to the Hamilton County Emergency Management team and the Good Samaritan Network for coming to the aid of all the families who needed help. Finally, a big shoutout to Panera Bread on Range Line Road who learned that many residents were being temporarily housed at a nearby clubhouse and showed up with free breakfast and coffee. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Street Sweeping
The Carmel Street Department takes pride in keeping our city streets clean, all year long and is able to do this with four sweepers that they own and operate. Two high-capacity vacuum sweepers maintain the east and west sides of the city while a global mechanical sweeper is primarily used from 146th Street to 96th Street and Keystone Parkway to Old Meridian Street. A smaller compact sweeper is used primarily in parking garages, parking lots, on-street parking and on narrow roads.
Thank you to our City departments!
