Mayor Brainard appointed to EPA Local Government Advisory Committee |
|
The Environmental Protection Agency announced this week that Mayor Jim Brainard has been appointed to the EPA Local Government Advisory Committee by Michael S. Regan, EPA administrator. Mayor Brainard is one of 34 new members to a diverse group that includes 20 women, 16 people of color and representation from 30 different states, Tribal nations and U.S. territories.
"I am honored to be selected to serve on this committee representing city elected officials. I look forward to developing a stronger connection between our federal and local governments as we work to protect the environment and improve human health," the Mayor said. "It is important that we share the successes of what municipalities have achieved when it comes to protecting our land and water resources and determine how the federal government can assist in these goals."

Artomobilia is back!
Artomobilia will take place this Saturday, August 28. Roads will close at 6 a.m. Saturday and the event runs from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Carmel Arts & Design District.

Bike Carmel Roundabout Ride registration is open
The City of Carmel and Bike Carmel are excited to host the inaugural Roundabout Ride on Saturday, September 25. The 25-mile and 50-mile rides, sponsored by IU North Hospital, will start at Midtown Plaza and go throughout the city. Click here for the Facebook event and here to register.

Chinese Mooncake Festival lights up the city
The Carmel-Xiangyang Sister City Committee and the City of Carmel presented the 2021 Chinese Mooncake Festival on August 21 in the Carmel Arts & Design District. The event featured a dragon parade, 16 performances by musicians and dancers and, of course, mooncakes.

Construction Updates
WESTFIELD BOULEVARD DONE! Carmel's 139th roundabout at 111th Street and Westfield Boulevard as well as the bridge south of 116th Street are complete; Westfield is open to traffic.
111th STREET & COLLEGE AVENUE ROUNDABOUT Construction of this new roundabout will begin on or after September 27 with an expected 45-day closure.
WALNUT STREET & RANGE LINE ROAD ROUNDABOUT Construction of this roundabout continues but should be substantially completed by the end of September.
MONON GREENWAY TRAFFIC DETOUR The reconstruction of the Monon crossing at 1st Street NW is still underway. Included with this work is a raised crosswalk at 1st Street NW, new drainage work, new sidewalk and curbs, and limited repaving of the Monon Greenway north and south of the crossing. During this construction, the Monon is closed from Main Street to 3rd Street NW. Monon Greenway users will be diverted on to the adjacent roadway, 2nd Ave NW. For a detour map, click here.

Carmel ranks 7th in Places for Bikes' list of medium sized cities great for biking
The organization known as People for Bikes has been rating how great cities in North America are for biking, with data driven metrics, for the last four years. In 2021 they changed their ranking system and began including cities from around the world.

Hamilton County American Rescue Plan Act accepting applications
The application portal to request American Rescue Plan Act funding assistance is now open for Hamilton County businesses, nonprofits and governmental units.
The funding will support hundreds of organizations that serve Hamilton County residents mitigate the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. All entities must complete the online process.

Movies at Midtown
Head to Midtown Plaza for Allied Solutions' Movies at Midtown! Movies will run on Mondays from May through October. Movie showing times are noon, 3 and 7 p.m.
August 30 - Happy Feet
There will not be a movie on Monday, September 6, Labor Day. Movies will resume on Monday, September 13 with a new evening showing time of 6 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.
Hand sanitizer stations are still available throughout Midtown Plaza. Please don't forget to clean up your surroundings once you've enjoyed the movie.

COVID-19 Delta variant increasing number of hospitalized patients
As hospitalizations in Indiana due to COVID-19 increase and the vast majority of those falling ill and being hospitalized were previously not vaccinated, we'd like to remind you that anyone age 12 and older is eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination.
