The Indiana Arts Commission will soon be posting guidelines and grant application information for its Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites program.

Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites draws upon traditional and non-traditional arts and artists in Indiana, weaving arts into our state's natural beauty and rural settings.

The program provides funding for arts program related projects that encourage the creation of and public engagement with art about the Indiana state park / forest system and historic sites. Guidelines and application information will be posted soon on the Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites page on the IAC website.

In partnership with the Indiana Bicentennial Commission and Department of Natural Resources Division of State Parks, the program was launched in Indiana's Bicentennial yeas as an on-going legacy gift to the citizens of Indiana.

To play in a school orchestra, the district matters

If you want to play violin in a high school orchestra in Ventura County, California, you have to live in the right school district or transfer into one.

Six local school districts have string programs in at least one of their high schools, most of them on the more affluent east end of the county. Three local districts have none.

Yet while high schools generally offer band and choir, they can't have a comprehensive music program without strings - violin, viola, cello and bass, said Zachary Borquez, band director at Oak Park High School, which plans to start a string program in the fall.

"Beethoven Mozart, they didn't write for band," Borquez said. "They wrote for orchestra."

There's another compelling reason to offer strings, said Valerie Ramirez, 16, who plays violin at Thousand Oaks High School. Symphonic music makes her life richer, she says. Read more here.
