While firefighters are fully trained and equipped for these situations, the department reminds the public that ice on rivers and other large bodies of water is never safe. February is Black History Month
For 50 years, February has been officially designated as Black History Month in the U.S. However, its roots go back further in Illinois to 1915, when historian Carter G. Woodson, considered the founder of Black history, came to Chicago to commemorate 50 years of emancipation with an exhibition that drew tens of thousands of visitors. His work would later inspire the annual recognition and celebration of the great contributions made by Black Americans.
Learn more about local Black history on the St. Charles History Museum’s website. Recently, the museum added the first home in Kane County to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
