Stay safe this Fourth of July: Fireworks safety tips
As we celebrate Independence Day, remember that fireworks can be dangerous — even sparklers burn at 1200°F. Each year, thousands are injured and fires spark due to improper use. In Illinois, most consumer fireworks are illegal, so stick to safer alternatives like glow sticks or attend professional displays. Be mindful of children, veterans, and pets who may be sensitive to loud noises. Let’s keep the holiday fun and safe for everyone. Celebrate smart, follow local laws, and enjoy the show — safely!

Residents are encouraged to ask to see this badge when confronted with a solicitor. If a solicitor refuses to show it, is rude, or won’t leave, please call 911 so an officer can respond.

Quick Code Check: Corner Lots — Keep It Low, Let Traffic Flow
We love a well-landscaped corner lot — but not at the expense of driver safety. City ordinance "12.04.200 Obstructing View at Corners - Prohibited" says anything taller than 30 inches (that’s about knee-high) within 20 feet of a corner can block a driver’s view — and that’s a no-go. Think of it as the “Sight Triangle,” a clear zone to help prevent fender benders and forgo awkward insurance calls. So, keep those hedges trimmed, fences low, and décor under control in the corner of a corner lot. Your neighbors (and their bumpers) will thank you! For the full scoop, under City Code 17.22.010 - General provisions, (F), search "slight triangle."

Thinking About Solar? Know the Rules
Verify local requirements with City before signing with a provider
Interest in solar power continues to grow, and the City often hears from both residents and solar providers with questions about installations. While key requirements for solar projects in the City of St. Charles are available on the City’s website, here are some guidelines.
To help ensure a smooth and compliant installation process, it's important to be informed about both the City’s requirements and the practices of solar providers. Please be aware that not all solar sales representatives are familiar with or concerned about local code requirements. Before signing any agreements, contact the City of St. Charles for guidance and ensure your installation follows all applicable rules.
If you have questions, call 630-377-4407.

Be aware of flood warnings
Sometimes flooding can be predicted days in advance, giving ample warning for preparation and evacuation. There are also warnings for conditions that may create flash flooding which are released from the National Weather Service.
Flash flooding is defined as: A flood caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time, generally less than 6 hours. Flash floods are usually characterized by raging torrents after heavy rains. They can occur within minutes or a few hours of excessive rainfall. They can also occur after a sudden release of water by a debris jam.
Because flash floods can develop quickly and with little warning, it’s important to know who to contact and how to stay informed during severe weather events.
- If you notice flash flooding, call the Public Works Department at 630-377-4405.
- If there is a flooding emergency that requires lifesaving efforts, dial 911.
- Watch for alerts from the National Weather Service on radio, television, social media, online or from the agency’s mobile app.
