Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking PPD Incident #26-52503
(PEORIA, IL) On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at approximately 2:20 a.m., officers with the Peoria Police Department responded to the 2600 block of N. Springdale Avenue on a report of an armed vehicular hijacking that had just occurred.
Upon arrival, officers contacted the adult male victim, who reported that he had been approached by three masked suspects. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.
The suspects forcibly took the victim's vehicle before fleeing the area. The victim was not injured during the incident.
Shortly after the incident, the stolen vehicle was detected by FLOCK cameras traveling northbound on Prospect Road from Tripp Avenue in Peoria Heights.
Peoria Heights Police located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the driver fled. Officers with the Peoria Police Department, Peoria County Sheriff's Office, and Illinois State Police observed the vehicle entering Interstate 74.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop on Interstate 90, where one occupant identified as 18-year-old Cole M. McCoy was taken safely into custody without further incident.
McCoy was arrested for the following offenses: • Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding • Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking with a Firearm • Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle • Criminal Damage to Property • Mob Action • Reckless Driving • Multiple Traffic Violations
McCoy was transported to the Peoria County Jail.
The remaining two suspects remain at large, and this incident remains under active investigation.
