A Love Letter to the Peoria Community
To the Peoria Community,
As I am preparing to retire from my position as Chief of Police, effective May 15, 2026, I want to take a moment to speak directly to a community that has meant so much to my family and me.
When I arrived in Peoria on July 30, 2021, I knew I was stepping into a role of great responsibility. What I did not fully understand at the time was just how deeply this community would embrace me. Although I was not from Peoria, you welcomed me as one of your own. You showed me grace, trust, and support, and that is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Over the past several years, we have walked through challenges together, stood strong in difficult moments, and celebrated meaningful progress. I have had the privilege of leading a department filled with dedicated professionals who care deeply about this city. Together, with your support, we have made strides to strengthen public safety, build trust, and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
From my very first day, my goal was simple: to leave this department and this community better than I found it. I believe we have made real progress toward that goal, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together. More importantly, I am proud of the relationships built and the trust that continues to grow.
This decision to retire comes after thoughtful reflection. As I look ahead, my son is entering high school, and this is an important time for my family. I want to be present for that chapter in his life, and I also recognize that this is the right time, both personally and professionally, to transition leadership.
As I remain in my role through May 15, I will be steadily stepping back to support a smooth and thoughtful transition as Assistant Chief Dixon prepares to take the helm. I have full confidence in his leadership and in the continued success of this department.
As the City prepares for its next Chief of Police, I ask for your continued support. Leadership transitions are never easy, but they are necessary. I respectfully ask that you extend to the next Chief the same grace, respect, and openness that you so generously extended to me. That support matters more than you may realize.
Peoria is a special place. It is a community built on resilience, pride, and strong values, but more than that, it is a community full of heart. You showed that to me every step of the way. Wherever life takes me next, Peoria will always hold a special place in my heart. This city, and the people in it, have left a lasting mark on me. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to serve you and to be a small part of your story.
Thank you for your trust, your support, and for allowing me to serve as your Chief of Police. With sincere gratitude,
Eric P. Echevarria Chief of Police Peoria Police Department If Serving is Beneath You, Leadership is Beyond You
