Statement From the Office of the Chief of Police
(PEORIA, IL) I know yesterday’s (8/22/25) incident near Manual High School was frightening for our students, parents, and the entire community. I want to take a moment to explain what happened and to reassure you about the steps we are taking to keep our schools safe.
The young man arrested is a 15-year-old student who had been suspended earlier in the day. Later, he returned to the school grounds with a firearm and fired multiple rounds, striking the building itself. Based on what we know, there is no indication that he was aiming at people, only at the structure.
I want to stress that there was no way to predict this act. What made the difference was the quick response of our officers, who were already in the area. Because of their vigilance, the suspect was arrested within minutes, and no students, staff, or officers were harmed.
We recovered the firearm, and the juvenile is facing serious charges, including Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.
As Chief, I could not be prouder of the men and women of the Peoria Police Department for their swift actions, and I thank the school staff for working closely with us. To the parents and families who waited anxiously while we secured the school. I understand your fear, and I thank you for your patience and trust.
I want everyone to know: your safety is our highest priority. We will continue to keep a strong police presence not only at Manual but throughout Peoria Public Schools. We will continue working side by side with school administrators, teachers, and families to maintain safety, open communication, and trust.
The Peoria Police Department is fully committed to protecting our schools and our community.
Eric Echevarria Chief of Police
