Support local businesses during construction
What better way to show support for Hemingway District businesses – and the environment – than biking regularly to shop and eat throughout the 2026 reconstruction of Oak Park Avenue. All businesses remain open and ready to serve their customers. With more than 150 bike parking spots available in the Hemingway District, it’s easy to take advantage of great weather by hopping on a bike to meet friends for a meal or shop for the perfect gift. For anyone who prefers to drive, free parking is available for up to 90 minutes (and all day Sunday) in the Avenue Garage at 720 North Blvd. Click here for spotlights of some of the businesses that call the Hemingway District home. The Renew the Avenue project continues to steadily progress toward substantial completion by Thanksgiving. Oak Park Avenue recently reopened to traffic from Ontario Street to Lake Street and from Randolph Street to Pleasant Street. Click here for an updated traffic flow map through the area.

Guidelines for native gardens in the parkway
The Village encourages residents to plant native gardens in their parkways to help enhance local biodiversity and support climate resilience. Under the Village’s Parkway Planting Ordinance, property owners are permitted to plant cultivated gardens in the parkway adjacent to their property without prior approval, provided plants do not exceed 36 inches in height or block the sidewalk or road. Ready to grow? Click here for additional guidance related to the ordinance, a list of parkway-friendly native plants and additional resources.

Provide feedback about community engagement via survey
The Village is working to strengthen how it engages with the community through the development of a Community Engagement Playbook. Village officials are seeking feedback via an online survey on how residents and stakeholders prefer to receive information, participate in engagement opportunities and provide input on issues that impact the community. Your feedback will help shape future engagement standards and practices across Village government.
